Previous message                 Next message Message #: 31388 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Sep 26, 2014 Subject: 1994 NLCS, game 2 Failing to take advantage of our game 1 miracle, the Reds learned that you can't give a team like the Expos a bunch of breaks and not expect disaster to ensue....   Ken Hill and Jose Rijo were the starters for the last game to be played in Riverfront Stadium this year, and they had the upper hand at first, both setting down the opposition in order in the first inning.   Then it unraveled quickly for Rijo.  A one-out walk (roll: 5-2) in an almost totally empty column was followed by an HBP (roll: 1-11) in an almost totally empty column and that was followed by a perfectly placed single from the hit & run chart and the Reds trailed 1-0 even though the Expos had yet to roll a column with a hit in it.   After a Ron Karkovice strikeout made it 2 outs in the frame, that 'problem' was rectified when non-hitting pitcher Ken Hill found Rijo's not-exactly-loaded 6 column and also found a timely 2 out hit waiting there.  2-0.  Sensing the discovery of a very good thing, HAL lasered in on that column and found the one other hit.  3-0.  The next batter got a hit on his own card but run #4 was gunned at the plate to stop the hemorrhaging.   Rijo was stitched up following his surgery and was able to continue.  He retired the next 6 batters he faced, while the CIN offense got a couple of baserunners and quickly came up with a couple of timely GIDPs.   Boone & Larkin opened the CIN 4th with a couple of singles and Hal Morris flew out to Larry Walker -- but he dropped the ball!  That loaded the bases with 0 outs for Kevin Mitchell and the crowd was in a frenzy.   Mitchell delivered, but not in a very big way, his soft grounder advancing the runners and breaking the shutout.  A walk to Reggie Sanders loaded the bases and Felix Jose temporarily became the man of the hour when he singled home the tying runs.  With still just 1 out, the go-ahead run died at third base when Tony Fernandez drew a 'Cincy split' on a hit chance and game 1 hero Lenny Webster whiffed on 3 pitches.   Having received one reprieve from the Governor, the Reds faced catastrophe again when another HBP helped load the bases for Montreal with 0 outs in the 6th.  This time there was no reprieve and the execution was allowed to proceed.   Wil Cordero laced a single off Rijo that moved everyone up a base and sent Rijo to the morgue so that Todd Jones could come on and issue a 4-pitch RBI free pass to Mike Lansing.  5-3, bases still loaded, still nobody out.   Incredibly, that's how the inning ended when Karkovice struck out again and this time the non-hitting pitcher behaved as expected and hit into an inning-ending double play instead of cracking another 2-out RBI hit.   But the home team's relief was short-lived, as Jeff Bagwell (who was somehow hitless so far today) got a BPHR chance in the 7th and rolled exactly at the split card limit to make the score 6-3.   Cincy's final opportunity of the day came in the 8th when, after 1 out, Mitchell singled and Sanders doubled him to third which caused John Wetteland to replace Hill on the hill.  Jose again had a chance to reduce our deficit considerably, got a chance at a hit and rolled exactly at the split card limit.  Plus one.   Wetteland faced 5 batters and HAL, taking 0 chances, had 4 of the 5 roll on Wetteland's barren card.  Final score: 6-3.   After a day of rest, the series moves north of the border to be completed.   Alan
