Lefty Jeff Fassero and righty Erik Hanson faced off at Olympic Stadium.
The Reds wasted no time getting on the board with a Larkin single and a two-out Andre Dawson rbi double. Larry Walker provided the equalizer in the bottom of the 2nd with a home run to centerfield off Hanson.
Meanwhile Jeff Fassero held the Reds at bay through 4 innings by striking out seven Reds. The Expos forged ahead in the bottom of the fourth. Jeff Bagwell hit a leadoff double. Alou popped out to second but Walker and Cordero followed with singles to drive in Bagwell and put runners at first and third. Mike Lansing followed with a sac fly and the Expos took a 3-1 lead.
Erik Hanson led off the 5th by reaching 2nd on Cordero’s two-base error. But Fassero was up to the task as he retired Jose, Larkin and Dawson around a walk to Sanders.
In the bottom of the 5th Hanson retired the first two hitters. He then gave up a single to Carlos Baerga and a walk to Bagwell. Moises Alou then hit a solid three-run bomb to center to establish a 6-1 Expo lead.
Fassero worked a scoreless sixth and got one out in the seventh before walking pinch-hitter Jerome Walton. Felix Jose struck out (Fassero’s 10th) but he then walked Barry Larkin. Mel Rojas came for the tiring Fassero and promptly gave up a single to Sanders to load the bases. Mel being Mel we were sweating bullets at this point but Andre Dawson could only\ manage a weak pop out to Cordero.
The Expos loaded the bases in the bottom of the 8th against Hector Carrasco but Paul Gibson came in to retire Sean Berry, Rafael Belliard and Ron Karkovice to hold the Expo lead at 5.
Taking no chances John Wetteland came in with a 6-1 lead and held it despite allowing a couple of base runners.
The Expos send another lefty to the mound in Butch Henry for game four.
