Previous message                 Next message Message #: 31395 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Sep 27, 2014 Subject: 1994 NLCS, game 4 The oddsmakers took an unexpected beating again, and there will have to be a 5th game in the 1994 National League championship series....   Kevin Gross, Cincy's only effective starting pitcher, went to the mound trying to duplicate his success from the series opener.  He was opposed by Expos lefty Butch Henry, who was making his initial appearance of the postseason.   Going for defense over extra offense, the Reds made a minor lineup change by inserting lefty swinger Hal Morris at first base instead of lumbering power hitter Andre Dawson.  That change proved immediately beneficial when Morris' 1-out single in the top of the first sent Felix Jose to third, from where he scored on a Reggie Sanders sac fly.   Another sac fly one frame later put the Reds up by the count of 2-0, but then came the kind of gift you just can't give to a team like the Expos: Gross, hardly an error-prone fielder, muffed one to start the bottom of the second.  That momentary lapse naturally opened the floodgates.  A pair of singles and an RBI groundout by the opposing pitcher quickly knotted the score.   Morris paid off again by opening the CIN 3rd with a single, and Benito Santiago took a Henry pitch over the left field wall with 2 outs to restore the visitors' 2-run lead.   But not for long.  Although Gold-Glove shortstop Barry Larkin's uncharacteristic boot a few seconds later was not costly, a Mike Lansing solo gopher in the 4th tipped the see-saw back towards the Expos, who now trailed by only a run.   The Reds appeared to be getting the better of the play but the numbers on the scoreboard remained uncomfortably close, as those 2 unearned runs Gross handed to the Expos just lurked there, waiting to prove themselves fatal.   Montreal continued to generate scoring opportunities: pitcher Henry doubled leading off the 5th but made it only as far as third base; Lansing singled with 2 on and 1 out in the 6th but Sanders erased Walker with a good throw to Santiago when Walker tried to score with the odds only slightly in his favor.   The Reds saw their season all but come to an end in the 7th when Grissom singled with 1 out and Baerga doubled him to third.  Gross' day came to an end at that point but the season (for now) did not, when Jeff Brantley -- in a perfect situation for an intentional walk -- was ordered to pitch to Jeff Bagwell... who struck out on 3 pitches!   So of course Brantley simply walked the next batter (not intentionally) to load the bases, but with a full count he got Walker to ground out.   Thus reprieved, three Cincy batters compiled a 1.000 on-base percentage against Mel Rojas in the 8th, and we swiftly registered a pair of RBI singles against John Wetteland (!) to extend the lead to 7-3.   Most of that insurance turned out to be necessary because Ron Karkovice's 2-out single in the bottom of the 8th was immediately followed by a timely dice roll in super-zoid pinch hitter Joe Hall's loaded 2 column.  Say goodbye to that one; 7-5 now.   Kirk McCaskill pitched an uneventful 9th against the Reds, and more importantly Brantley did the same by retiring the heart of the MON order in order to preserve the extremely shaky 7-5 win.   Jose Rijo will try to avenge his game 2 defeat in the series finale, while Pedro Martinez is currently the scheduled pitcher for the Expos.   Alan
