Game 2: As stated previously, the Reds are going to play a LOT of games like this in 1995. Unhittable Sid Fernandez vs. Brian Williams and his 6.0 ERA should have been another mound mismatch but both pitchers were highly ineffective today. However it was Williams, not Fernandez, who stood by and blew leads of 2-0 and 4-2 on the way to a gopher-ridden 7-4 defeat. HAL didn't need to screw the Cincy defense in this one, because he was too busy giving the Cubs batters every possible break on split cards (7 of 9 times they got the advantageous split, most of them going for extra bases). Williams finally succumbed after his third gopher attack of the day, and it took reliever Tim Fortugno only 2 pitches to choke up his gopher, at which point Todd Jones mopped up and allowed no further scoring; the Cubs needed no more anyway. Final score: 7-4. Mark Lewis & Jerome Walton led the all-righty attack against Fernandez, both registering his first home run of the season, but Borland held the Reds to no runs in 3.1 innings of relief which allowed the choke to proceed naturally, with the Cubs scoring in each of the last 4 innings in which they batted after being shut out through the first 4. ========================================================================= Game 3: A pair of newcomers -- Mike Mimbs and Dave Burba -- gave the Reds their first good pitching performance of the season by scattering 5 hits on the way to a 7-1 win that should have been more like 14-1. The Cincy offense pounded out 14 hits, and probably not coincidentally also racked up 14 LOB (a whopping 9 'RLISP-2 out' on the scoresheet). But the second touchdown wasn't required, particularly due to Burba's 3 innings of hitless relief which earned him his first save as a Red. Trevor Wilson started for Chicago and found out (as Fernandez had) that, even without Kevin Mitchell on the roster, being a lefty and facing the Reds is not a desirable task. Who needs Mitchell anyway? We have Mark Lewis! Lewis followed up a big game 2 (4 1 3 1, double, homer) with a 2 for 4 day that included his second home run of the series. Another newcomer, Brian Hunter, had a fine debut series with a .643 OBP, .909 slugging and a timely OF assist, but he can only go downhill from there. Alan |
