In a tight division the Padres have the opportunity to do something that has never been done. They can go from first to worst to first to worst. However the way they started the season may put the chances of that happening on hold. game 1: Padres went out-1b-out-1b-out as it took all of 3 splits to get the first 20 of the season (all were x play outs). The third out started a streak of 16 consecutive batters retired by both pitchers as the bats seemed to be left in Florida (actually arizona). Gwynn opened the 4th with a single and stole 2nd base. Caminiti hit one deep to right that Hill was able to snag but he crashed hard into the wall, allowing Gwynn to come around from 2nd for the first run of the year. After retiring the first 11 batters he faced, Ashby walked Williams and then Bonds followed with a single before Ashby recovered for out #3. In the 5th, Gwynn had an rbi single to up the lead to 2. Roberts homered in the 6th and Caminiti added his 2nd sac fly of the game in the 7th. San Fran finally got on the board in the 7th on a Carreon bp homer (split of 2) but the Padres went right back to work in the 8th. The inning didn't look like much after it started, out-2b-out but Finley doubled to chase Navarro. Beck came on and just added fuel to the simmering fire, allowing single-walk-single to the 3 batters he faced. Veres was summoned and allowed 2 weak comebackers. Apparently he had some opening day jitters as he flubbed both of them (5-3 rolls) to allow 2 more runs. The third batter also hit a weak grounder but just enough to the side that Williams came in and made the play (5-4 roll). Hill, apparently ok after his run-in with the wall, crushed a homer in the 9th to make the final 8-2. game 2: game 1 was just a warm up act for the Padres. After a quiet first inning the Padres jumped all over Mike Morgan in the 2nd. Petagine opened with a double and Roberts walked. Ausmus bunted them up and then the Padres got 6 straight hits and scored 7 runs. Padres added 3 more in the 4th as Finley led off with a homer and Gwynn had his 2nd rbi double of the game and scored on a Petagine ground out. Discarsina had a 2 run double in the 5th and Caminiti crushed an auto hr in the 6th to complete the Padres scoring. The Giant offense was mainly hitting the ball to Bip Roberts at 2b. He allowed not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 bp singles, including 2 in the 3rd that helped the Giants score their 2 runs (another hit was a corner in x play). Hamilton went 7 for the win and had an rbi single in that big 2nd inning. The Padres started emptying the bench in the 6th. The first 3 spots in the lineup had 3 hits each and the top 4 went 11-18 with 8 runs and 9 rbi. game 3: Padres had another fast start but couldn't maintain the onslaught of games 1 and 2. Padres got out-2b-out-2b-1b to score twice in the top of the first. Matt Williams homered with 2 outs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half. Manwaring had an rbi triple in the 2nd and Bonds a 2 run triple in the 3rd and SF led 5-2 after 3 innings. Easley and Gwynn had back to back 2 out rbi doubles in the 5th to cut the lead to one. In the 7th, the Padres had a runner on 3rd with out one. Easley got the gbB for the out at the plate and Gwynn followed with what would have been a game tying clutch hit had the runner still been on third. That was the straw that broke the Padres back. Deverauex led off the SF 7th with a hr and added an unearned run later in the inning. A double and 3 walks (one to the pitcher) got the Giants a run in the 8th to make the final 8-4. Padres "only" had 12 hits in this one and had 42 for the series. Both teams had 5 extra base hits. The Padres had 5 doubles while SF had a double, 2 triples and 2 hr's. |
