Apparently these 2 teams didn't get the memo about arenaball is starting. The teams combined for 32 hits in the 3 games (by contrast SD alone had 30 in their first 2 games). It helped that both the bp single and homer were automatic outs. Boston didn't have more than 5 hits in a game and the Yankees had half their 18 in game 1. Boston made the best use of their hits and took 2 of 3. game 1: Boston had just 4 hits in this one but bunched them in a 10 batter stretch in the 4th and 5th innings. Boston went down 1-2-3 in 6 innings and the other 3 made three straight outs after the first batters reached. After the first 10 batters of the game went down, Oneill and Stanley had back to back singles. The Yankees got their first run of the year on a passed ball. The Yankees used 3 singles to score another run in the 3rd but a botched double steal kept it from potentially being bigger. Valentin finally got Boston's first hit (and first baserunner) to lead off the 4th, getting an 18 on his 1-18 single. Tinsley followed with a double and Naehring was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mo cleared the bases with an auto hr and Boston led 4-2. The next 3 went down in order. In the 5th, Fabregas walked and Kirby laid down a bunt that Veres threw into right field for a 2 base error. Valentin followed with a 2 run single (the last of Boston's hits) to make it 6-2. Tinsley's lead off walk in the 8th would be the only other baserunner for Boston in the game. Meanwhile Jason Jacome was avoiding trouble, at least until the 7th. Back to back one out doubles brought in 1 run and Boggs had a 2 out single to make it 6-4 before Jacome got out of the inning. Maddux had a perfect 8th and Belinda a perfect 9th to earn the save. game 2: Boston looked like it was ready to shake out the of the game 1 doldrums. Valentin led off the game with a home run and Tinsley singled, stole second and went to 3rd on the throwing error. Naehring was hit again but Vaughn couldn't follow with a hr (he struck out) but Oleary singled in the 2nd run. After 3 hits in the first, Boston would get 2 the rest of the game. In the 2nd, Miller had an rbi double but Mattingly was thrown out at the plate on the play to end the inning. Eshelman and Cone settled in and it stayed 2-1 until the 8th. Eshelman left after 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 walk. Ken Ryan was brought on and immediately earned his fireman status as he threw gas on the smoldering embers. Boggs walked and stole 2nd to open the inning. Velarde singled him to third and Williams struck out. Ryan then fell apart, issuing back to back walks on 6-6 to force in the tying run and then walking Stanley on his card to force in the go ahead run. He recovered to get the next 2 batters but the damage was done. Cone finished the complete game 3-2 win. game 3: Valentin led off by reaching on a 2 base error by Reuben Sierra. Tinsley bunted him to third where he scored on a Naehring grounder to give Boston another first inning lead. Boston went down in order until Canseco and Oleary hit back to back homers to lead off the 5th. 3 singles produced another run in the 6th but a bigger ended on a dp grounder. Wakefield tossed 8 innings of 2 hit ball (a double and triple) and Belinda finished off the 4-0 win. Boston left 8 men on base the entire series (2 in each of the wins and 4 in the loss). NY left just 17 (8 in their win). Twice the Yankees had lead off triples (1-4 and 1-2 chances) and didn't score in the series. |
