In what can only be described as an ugly series, Boston wins the first 2 as arenaball has arrived. game 1: Boston scored a run in each of the first 3 innings. Naerhing had an rbi double in the first, Canseco homered in the 2nd and Vaughn had an rbi single in the 3rd. Boston could have had a bigger lead if they didn't hit into double plays in 3 of the first 5 innings. Plantier's rbi single in the 6th finally got Seattle on the board but Boston got that run back in the 7th on a Valentin home run. With 2 on and 2 out in the 8th, Lofton committed a 2 base error that eventually led to 2 more Boston runs. Clemens left after 7 innings with a 6-1 lead, having allowed just 4 hits but 6 walks (most on 4-7 rolls). Assemacher came in and was dinked and dunked. An x play single was followed by back to back 1-8 that were on base chances in a sea of outs for both batters. A hbp forced in another run before Griffey flew out to end the inning. Boston won 6-3 as Belinda picked up his 3rd save of the year. Boston out hit Seattle 13-7 but Seattle "won" the LOB race 14-7 thanks to 8 walks and 3 hbp. game 2: This marathon can be summed up in x plays. Seattle turned a dp on a ball hit to a 3e34 while Boston's 2e3 in left field allowed a double, single and 2 base error in his 4 x play chances. As a result this game took 16 innings to complete. Seattle started this one similar to how they got their last run in game 1. This time it was a bases loaded walk forcing in a run. In the 2nd they got 2 runs on a ground out and double by Cora to take a 3-0 lead. Boston came right back in the 3rd as the first 5 batters reached on a 1b-1b-2b-bb-1b. A sac fly later in the inning provided the tying run. The onslaught continued in the 4th as Boston got walk-bunt-1b-1b-walk-1b-bunt-1b to score 5 times. Cora's rbi single in the bottom of the inning cut it to 8-4. Griffey homered leading off the 5th to make it 8-5. Cora's 3rd rbi hit made it 8-6 in the 6th and things looked good for Boston as the next 2 batters grounded out. Sele uncorked a wild one to allow Cora to score and Buhner doubled on a 3-11 roll. Sorrento then lifted one to left that Mouton misplayed into the tying run. In the 8th, Naerhing walked but was erased as Vaughn tapped one to 3e34 Cora at 2b for the double play. Next 2 batters singled before Greenwell lined out to end the inning. Seattle loaded the bases with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th before Sojo struck out to end the inning. Seattle got a 1b and 1b+error to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs in the 11th. Plantier had a shallow fly out and Lofton hit into a force out before Cora grounded out to end the inning. Vaughn finally ended the scoring drought with a bp homer with 2 outs in the 16th. Belinda allowed a lead off double before retiring the next 3 for his 4th save of the year. Boston won 9-8 in 16 innings when it was 8-8 after the 6th inning. Sox outhit the Mariners 25-19 and "won" the LOB race 22-18. game 3: After the marathon, Naehring and Valentin both got a deserved day off, not that it would have mattered. Seattle wasted no time by scoring 3 times in the first. Tinsley's rbi single in the 3rd got Boston on the board and Vaughn's 2 run homer in the 6th tied it. Eschelman then fell apart in the bottom of the inning. 3 of the first 4 batters walked to load the bases. 1b-1b-sac fly-3b-hr and it was 10-3. Boston used a drop foul pop and 3 singles to score in the 8th but Seattle got a 2 run Maldonaldo double to make it a 12-4 final. |
