With the series tied at two games apiece, game 1 starters Jimmy Key and Ken Hill faced each other for a second time.
The Expos wasted no time scoring in the bottom of the 1st off Jeff Bagwell’s two-run home run. Ken Hill made this lead stand up pitching effecting through 6 innings. The Expos added a run in the bottom of the 6th on an rbi single by Sean Berry driving home Jeff Bagwell.
Down 3-0 the Yankees sent Dave Clark up to hit for Jimmy Key and he promptly doubled. After Wade Boggs drew a walk Ken Hill was pulled (after 109 pitches). Tim Scott came on to face Danny Tartabull who hit for Spike Owen. Tartabull’s single loaded the bases. Scott knuckled down to get Don Mattingly on a fly to center that scored Clark. Paul O’Neill then walked to reload the bases. That was enough for Tim Scott and (the unlucky) Mel Rojas was brought in. Jim Leyritz hit a high chopper that advanced all the runners and scored Boggs. It was now two out and 3-2 Expos when Jacob Brumfield ground a ball to the hole in short. Wil Cordero tried to make the play but threw the ball wide of first (or second…who can know since the bases were loaded, eh). Ruled a hit and an error Brumfield advanced all the way to third. This was important as Mel Rojas then uncorked a wild pitch scoring Brumfield. A shaken Mel Rojas walked Donnels and Cangelosi before finally getting Dave Clark to fly out on his 2nd at bat of the inning. The 5 spot put the Yankees up 5-3.
Jeff Shaw was brought on in relief of Jimmy Key to start the bottom of the 7th. Lou Frazier was chosen to hit for the luckless Rojas and worked Shaw for a walk. Carlos Baerga pinch hit for Mike Lansing. Frazier stole 2nd and Carlos rifled a single to center to score Frazier. Wil Cordero grounded out advancing Baerga to second for the red-hot Jeff Bagwell. Shaw was up to the task however and induced Bagwell to pop to short. Moises Alou was up next and in dramatic fashion doubled home Baerga to tie the score 5-5. Shaw intentionally walked Larry Walker to pitch to Sean Berry. The strategy paid off as Berry hit a routine fly to left.
Kirk McCaskill pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning and Shaw matched this in his half of the 8th. Pedro Martinez, relegated to the bullpen after his terrible game 2 start, pitched another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 9th.
Shaw continued to pitch in the bottom of the 9th and Carlos Baerga singled to lead off the inning. With a sell-out Olympic Stadium crowd going nuts Wil Cordero lined out and Jeff Bagwell was retired by Shaw a second time on a fly to left. Moises Alou then came up and ground to 2nd baseman Chris Donnels who played the grounder into a hit and error. This put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Larry Walker was again intentionally walked to load the bases for Sean Berry. The strategy appeared to work as on Jeff Shaw’s 50th pitch Berry ground to Wade Boggs. But the normally sure-handed Boggs kicked the grounder and Baerga sprinted home with the winning run.
A walk off error is a somewhat anti-climactic way to win (but we will certainly take it). I’m not sure why the reluctance to bring in a reliever other than Shaw. Jeff Bagwell now has 5 home runs in 5 World Series games. Thank you for showing up!!
Back to New York with the Expos leading the series 3 games to 2. I have attached new manager for games 6 and 7.
