Well, it took us 20 years, but we all got the 1994 World Series we've been waiting for.  Take that, Selig!

Subject: [SmileyList] 1994 World Series, game 7 [1 Attachment]

(Game 7 autoplayed @ league HQ by owner agreement.)

A see-saw series in which the teams had alternated wins through 6 games appropriately had a game 7 that fit the same pattern.  Like many of the preceding contests, it also featured no shortage of scoring opportunities -- and no shortage of *missed* scoring opportunities as the squads combined for 17 LOB.

Both starters Melido Perez and Jeff Fassero failed to escape the opening frame without damage.  Lou Frazier led off the game by working Perez for a free pass and he was tripled home by Jeff Bagwell, who scored one pitch later on a Moises Alou grounder to second.

With 2 outs and nobody on in the bottom of the inning, Bernie Williams' homer cut the Expos lead to 2-1.  Neither team even threatened in the second or third innings, and in the NYA 3rd Fassero retired the side in order, striking out Gallego, Tartabull & Boggs and using a total of 9 pitches to do so.

Perez retired 12 of the next 13 Montreal batters following Bagwell's 1st inning triple, and NYA knotted the score in the 4th on a 2-out RBI double by ex-Expo Spike Owen which plated Williams.  Catcher Mike Stanley tried to chug around from first on Owens' hit but was nailed at the plate by Larry Walker's throw.

Each side got a pair of runners aboard in the 5th; nobody scored.

The Expos almost retook the lead in the 6th when Walker doubled with Alou on first, but Williams matched Walker's OF assist and gunned down Alou.  However the Expos did retake the lead one batter later on Wil Cordero's double.  Following an intentional walk to Darrin Fletcher, reliever Jeff Shaw replaced Perez and got Marquis Grissom to fly out and rack up another 2 LOB for the visitors.

New York took better advantage of its chances and tied the contest once again in the 7th.  With 1 out, Owen lined one behind the bag at second which Carlos Baerga knocked down.  Despite having no play at first, Baerga threw anyway and it got away from Bagwell for a single+error.

Don Mattingly jumped on Fassero's next pitch for a flyout, but Mike Gallego came through with a single that MON 3B Sean Berry couldn't get to and Owen scored on Montreal's second infield blown-x of the inning.

The see-saw tipped back --one last time -- in favor of Montreal moments later when Walker doubled with 1 out then held at second on a grounder.  Fletcher was IW'd again but this time the strategy backfired.  Consecutive singles by Grissom and Berry put the visitors ahead 6-4 and ended Shaw's day.

Kent Mercker stopped the bleeding and gave his team one more chance at a comeback.

Boggs singled to open the NYA 8th, terminating Fassero and bringing on Pedro Martinez.  Martinez was throwing hard, but not always with control as he sandwiched a pair of outs (both were missed chances at extra base hits) around 2 walks, loading the bases for Owen.

Martinez was yanked in favor of Tim Scott, and Scott (who led all pitchers with 5 appearances in the series) did his job by fanning Owen.

The Expos iced the game in the 9th on a 2-run homer by Alou before LOBbing 2 more, and Scott put down the Yankees 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th to seal the 7-3 win and give the Expos their first world championship.  The Expos are no strangers to the postseason (13 trips in 26 seasons), but they won more postseason series in 1994 (3) than they had in their history up to that point (2).

Alou & Bagwell had a monster series for the winners, combining to go 22 for 56 with 6 doubles, 8 home runs and 19 RBI.  Bagwell's 5 HR ties the league record for a postseason series, as do his 11 runs scored.
