Subject: Reds @ Padres

The team with the most offensive talent in the entire N.L. continues to underachieve by astronomical proportions every week, and this was definitely no exception; fortunately the Cincy pitching is holding up reasonably well (aside from the massively underachieving bullpen of course).

In an extreme rarity, the Reds were out-LOBbed in all 3 games.  Our clutch hitting is still atrocious as ever so that doesn't explain the low counts, we simply didn't have any runners on base to begin with in this series....

Game 1: Scott Kamieniecki made his CIN debut and could have used a little more support, but he got enough.  Kamieniecki (we should have traded for a pitcher whose name is easier to spell) permitted just 1 blown-x "earned" run in 6 IP and for a change the bullpen didn't blow it.  Final score: 5-2.

Jeff Shaw made his CIN debut too, in mediocre fashion with 1 run in 2 IP which lowered his ERA to 14.73 -- he'll fit in nicely here -- and new full-time closer Jeff Brantley replaces the late, unlamented Todd Jones in that role.  Brantley earned today's save with 1 scoreless frame which lowered his ERA to a microscopic 7.04.

The Reds scored 2 in the 2nd thanks to a blown-x by SDN LF Bip Roberts before we returned half of that favor 2 innings later.  Eddie Taubensee's 2-run double and Barry Larkin's solo homer completed the scoring for the visitors.

=======================================================================

Game 2: SDN starter Joey Hamilton has a good card but had struggled up to now in 1995; turns out all he needed was a dose of Vitamin C(incinnati) to turn things around.  Hamilton scattered 4 singles and 1 walk in 7 scoreless innings, and reliever Doug Bochtler completed the whitewash job.  Final score: 3-0.

Jose Rijo took loss #1 of the season thanks mainly to a 2-run split card gopher by Robert Petagine in the 4th, the same BPHR chance the Reds had naturally missed earlier in the no-contest.  Rijo, whose ERA skyrocketed to 2.12 today, had a solid outing otherwise, fanning 9 Padres in 6 innings while walking only 2.

=======================================================================

Game 3: Five of Cincy's 9 hits went for extra bases, including a trio of 2-run homers which plated 100% of our 6 runs.  Final score: 6-4.

CIN starter Brian Keyser had blown an early 4-2 lead and the score remained knotted at 4 from the 5th through the 8th innings.  Finally in the CIN 9th, the hot-hitting Taubensee came through with our third 2-run blast of the game which made a loser out of Bryce Florie and a winner of Shaw, whose 3 scoreless relief innings plummeted his ERA to an almost Brantley-esque 8.10!  At least the trend is, for now, in the right direction with these guys.

The Larkin-Boone DP combo was responsible for the other two homers, and newcomer Chad Curtis was welcomed to the unluckiest offense anywhere by rolling one loaded column after another for 3 games.... and going 1 for 10.

Alan
