Padres take the bookends as Gwynn stays hot.
game 1: Petagaine doubled and scored on a sac fly in the 2nd. Padres used the same script in the 3rd, just different actors as Finley doubled and scored on a sac fly. The Mets couldn't quite copy that play in the 4th as they got a double that scored on a fielders choice. In the 6th, Petagine doubled again and scored on a Bullet single to make it 3-1. In the 8th the Mets got a lead off single and the next batter grounded one to 1e31 Ken Caminiti. There was no chance it was going to be a gbA but it ended up being a 2 base error. Dewey came on and got a grounder that scored a run but yet another double tied the game up. With first base open and just 1 out, the Mets elected to pitch to Gwynn, who missed the double but still came through with a 2 run single to give SD the 5-3 win. Dewey got the win, despite the blown save and Hoffman got the save. The teams combined for 8 doubles in the game.
game 2: With 2 outs and no one on Gwynn and Caminiti had back to back doubles (sensing a pattern here?) to put SD up 1-0. Dykstra led off with a hr 1-4 chance and pulled the 3 for the tying homer. Vizcaino doubled in a run in the 2nd to give NY their first lead of the series. In the 4th, Gwynn led off with a homer and Ausmus had an rbi double to put SD up. That lead lasted less than half an inning as the Mets got a run on a groundout, after a double put a runner on 3rd. Hundley homered in the 6th (split of 5) and Everett hit a 2 run shot (split of 3) in the 7th to make the final 6-3.
game 3: This one looked over early, despite SD getting bad splits. The Padres first 5 splits were 10,14,14,17 and 10 but (miracles of miracles) they resulted in 4 doubles and a homer. The Padres had a 7-1 lead after 3. The Mets got 2 in the 6th on a bases loaded single by McLemore but the Padres got those back plus 1 in the 7th. 4 singles a ground out produced the 3 runs. Just when it looked like SD could rest a few guys, the Mets used 3 singles and a double to score 3 times in the bottom of the inning. The Mets added another run in the 8th on a force play to make the final 10-8. Hoffman had a 1-2-3 9th for his 2nd save of the series.
14 of the Padres 32 hits were doubles in the series. Gwynn went 8-12 with 6 rbi and is now batting .432 with a league high 15 doubles and is tied for the lead with 34 rbi (more than the next 2 Padres combined).
