Subject: Reds @ Cardinals

In a division which the Reds should win by a similar margin to that of 1994, this team of massive underachievers is having considerable trouble getting any traction and performances like the one in the opener of this series nicely illustrate the problem (though we did get the desired outcome -- barely -- in the other two games)....

Game 1: It was yet another classic episode of "Nobody, But Nobody, Chokes Like The Reds".  Give any other team in baseball a 5-0 lead after half an inning and it's "game over" 99.9% of the time.  But these are the Reds, and hilariously incompetent first round pick Dave Burba gave back 2 of those 5 runs before he even retired 1 batter.

We got 2 more in the second against reliever John Frascatore (starter Mark Leiter lasted 0.1 inning) and Burba promptly gave 1 back.  As long as he was only forfeiting *part* of the lead each inning, it seemed that the Reds would be OK.  But as so often happens, the Cincy offense went into hibernation while our opponent's did not.

The 7-3 lead was erased entirely in the 6th inning with -- of course -- 2 outs, and a first-pitch gopher off the bat of Tim Salmon caused Burba's belated exit.  We scratched out another slim lead, which reliever Jeff Brantley obliterated via another gopher bite, and this one was fatal.  Final score: Cards 9, Nobody-Chokes-Like-The-Reds 8.

Game 2: The same routine today, but with just 3 runs in the top of the first prior to Hibernation Time.  But CIN starter Tim Pugh, whose record is as execrable as Burba's, was stingy with the baserunners and his only real mistake came when Ron Gant rolled a HR 1-2, fb(B) 3-20 and naturally got the surgical split card (moments before Cincy's Herb Perry missed a mere 1-17 chance).

Pugh took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th but put a pair of runners on base with 1 out.  Brantley, given another chance to foul things up, delayed not one bit in doing just that by immediately choking up an RBI single and putting the tying run on base.  But somehow the arson-prone Cincy closer set down J.T. Snow and N.L. MVP leader Gary Gaetti to end the game.  Final score: 4-2.

============================================================================

Game 3: Jose Rijo, our 5-inning ace whose career ends once he runs out of usage in 1995, had another solid outing and limited St. Louis to 4 baserunners in 5 IP.  Although the Cincy offense staged a LOB-a-thon (us: 11, them: 5), Rijo still managed to have a 2-1 lead before the Arson Squad took over.

Jeff Branson & Eddie Taubensee later singled home a pair of insurance runs, but the Cardinals were not about to go down without a struggle.  Taubensee's RBI came in the top of the 9th on a play which saw a Cincy runner gunned on the bases to end the inning.

Reliever Hector Carrasco tried to get himself into a jam in the SLN 8th and failed, but he succeeded nicely in the bottom of the 9th.  Carrasco issued a free pass to Tim Salmon and Ray Lankford doubled him to third & brought the tying run up to bat.

Snow flew out to Eric Anthony in left field, and since Anthony is so utterly helpless at the plate (.091) it's good that he can at least throw the ball properly.  Which is what he did, to nail Salmon at the plate and offset our lost runner from a few seconds earlier.  Carrasco gave a sigh of relief and calmly completed Gaetti's 0-for-12 series to end the contest.  Final score: 4-1.
