Subject: BAA @ TOA Week 6

(Still no new CM for the Orioles this week.)

The Orioles inched above .500 with three straight come-from-behind victories.

Game 1: BAA 6, TOA 3

The Orioles’ first baserunner, Brady Anderson, was picked off first in the 1st.  That wasn’t possible for the first Toronto baserunner, Ed Sprague, as he took a leisurely trot around the bases in the 2nd.  Tony Phillips followed suit in the 4th to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.  In the 6th, the Orioles finally cashed in.  Craig Biggio tied it with a two-run double, taking third on the throw with no outs.  It looked like he would be stranded there until Jeffrey Hammonds took Erik Hanson deep to put Baltimore on top 4-2.  Orioles starter Mike Mussina didn’t allow any hits other than those homers until a harmless single in the 7th, but in the 8th he gave up an RBI single to Robby Alomar to make it a one-run game.  Solo homers in the 9th by Chris Hoiles and Keith Lockhart in the 9th gave the O’s some breathing room, although they left the bases loaded – which didn’t matter as Randy Myers pitched a 1-2-3 9th for his sixth save.

Game 2: BAA 5, TOA 4

Anderson took a lesson from Sprague and led off the game by taking Toronto starter Pat Hentgen deep; Hentgen then gave up three walks and two singles before retiring a batter, but a damage-controlling double play kept the score from getting worse than 3-0.  A double play also helped Baltimore starter Scott Erickson survive a jam with only one run scored.  Erickson was less fortunate in the third, as he served up a two-run gopher ball to Joe Carter and made an error to help put Toronto up 4-3.  Cal Ripken tied it with a single in the 5th.  In the 8th, Rafael Palmeiro put the last pitch from a tired Hentgen in the stands in the 8th to put the O’s back in the lead, although Shawn Green gunned down Darren Lewis at the plate to end the inning.  Myers gave up a double in the 9th but held on for another save.

Game 3: BAA 4, TOA 3

The Jays got three two-out runs in the 1st, thanks largely to a Green double, although Lewis returned the favor to throw Sprague out at home to end the inning.  The Orioles missed several scoring opportunities until they broke out in the 6th; three straight doubles started a four-run rally for a 4-3 lead.  The Blue Jays lost a scoring opportunity in the 8th when pinch-runner Paul Molitor was picked off, and the fatigued Myers survived a shaky 9th for his third save in three days.

One odd note from Game 4: Each team had four players in the lineup that got a hit – but the Orioles outhit the Jays 10-4.
