despite the usual rolls and split card results, the Padres manage to take 2 of 3 from LA
game 1: Gwynn hit a 2 run homer in the 2rd to put the Padres on top but the Dodgers came right back in the bottom of the inning. Two singles, a double and a 2 run homer put the Dodgers up 4-2. Bullet's 2 run triple in the 4th knotted it back up. Pendleton's 2 out error in the 9th put the Padres up 1 and brought Trevor Hoffman into the game. First batter, 4-9 double. After a grounder, the next batter rolled a 5-9. Instead of being a game ending homer, it was just a game tying single. All that did was delay the inevitable by 2 batters as Butler doubled (on his own card) for the 6-5 LA win.
game 2: Padres again scored in the 3rd inning, this time on a bases loaded wild pitch. In the 6th, Karros beat the tag at the plate (1-6 chance) to tie the game and then the Dodgers got the go ahead run 3 batters later. Now it was the Dodgers turn to blow a 9th inning lead. Easley led off the inning with a single and scored on Gomez's pinch double to tie the game. Gomez would score on a sac fly to put the Padres up 3-2. Hoffman came in and shut the door this time, striking out the side on 9 pitches. Luckily he was facing left handed hitters as 2 of the k's were on 4-8 and 4-9 rolls.
game 3: Hamilton tossed a "masterful" 12 hitter in his 7 innings, by and large avoiding potential damage. In the first, the first 4 Dodgers had singles but they could only manage 1 run thanks to an accidental throwing out a trailing runner. A single, bunt and single got the Dodgers another run in the 2nd. Caminiti had a 3 run homer in the 4th to put the Padres up 1. The Dodgers used 3 singles to tie the game in the 6th. Padres got bb,1b,bb to open the 8th. After a force at the plate,Williams came through with a 2 run single to put the Padres up 5-3. They added an insurance run in the 9th as Gwynn singled, stole second, went to 3rd on a bunt and scored on a sac fly. Dewey pitched the 9th for his first save.
