After a game 1 blowout, the strat gods reek their vengence in the last 2 games.
game 1: Oleary opened the Boston 2nd with a double and looked like he would be stranded after the next 2 batters grounded out. Fletcher then grounded one just out of the reach of Gates for an x play rbi single and Valentin followed with a 2 run homer to make it 3-0. Oakland came right back with 3 singles, a bases loaded walk (one away from an inning ending gbA) and a force out to cut the lead to 1. Fletcher's sac fly in the 4th made it 4-2. Boston had a chance to add more but Mouton got a clutch out to end the inning. To prove that wasn't a fluke, Mouton got another clutch out in the 6th inning. Naerhing, Vaughn and Canseco opened the 7th with 3 doubles and Greenwell added a sac fly for the 3rd run of the inning. Oakland got 1 back in the bottom of the inning on a force play. In the 8th, Vaughn tripled and scored on a sac fly. Oleary reached on an error and a single and walk loaded the bases. Fletcher had a single for his 3rd rbi of the game. Espinosa came on as a pinch hitter for Valentin (to save him an ab) and got a clutch single to make it 11-3. Mouton then stepped up and possibly made history with his strikeout. No it wasn't another clutch out but he made the final out for the 3rd straight inning. 7 of Boston's 15 hits were for extra bases and they drew 9 walks (2 int) and managed to leave 13 on base despite scoring 11 runs.
game 2: Oakland managed just 3 runs again but Boston was held to just 2 in this one but the game was literally decided at the plate. After the first 11 A's went down in order, Big Mac lifted one into the seats for a bp homer and a 1-0 lead. Tinsley's rbi single in the 5th tied it back up but Oakland went right back on top in the bottom of the 5th. They got 1b-2b-1b (both 1b's on 6-8 rolls) for the run. Vaughn homered leading off the 7th. In the bottom of the 8th, Belinda and his 18/12 card came on. First batter rolls 5-6 and some how misses the 2b 1-3 (16) for the first out. Next batter rolls 5-5 for a double.... but wait, Boston was guarding the lines and its out #2. Having rolled 2 of the 3 hit chances on Belinda's card, HAL decided a different approach was needed. Berroa rolls a bp homer on his own card and gets a 4 for the winning hr. Remember how I said the game was decided at the plate? On Tinsley's rbi single, a second runner was thrown out at the plate. The 1-15 runner got a 16 and then a 15 on the 1-14 safe chance. The game ended with a 1-13 runner getting a 15 to be thrown out at the plate.
game 3: Oakland had 3 2 run innings, each keyed by hits on rolls of 4-6. After Boston got an unearned run in the first, 2 of Oakland's 3 hits were on 4-6's (a single and a double) and they scored twice. Just like game 1, McGwire rolled a 1-4 walk when 1-5 would have been an inning ending dp without a run scoring. Valentin homered in the 3rd andKirby had an rbi double in the 4th to put Boston up 3-2. In the bottom of the 4th, Gates had an rbi single on a 4-6 roll and another run scored on a force out to put Oakland back up for good. Williams added a 2 run 2 out single (on the 4-6 roll of course) in the 6th to make it 6-3. Eusebio had an rbi grounder in the 9th to make the final 6-4.
