Subject: BAA @ TEA Week 7

(Still no new CM for Orioles for Week 8.)

The Orioles swept a three-game series in Texas that featured very little pitching and a whole lot of Rafael Palmeiro.

Game 1: BAA 10, TEA 2

Baltimore’s Brady Anderson led off the game with a double and scored on a single by Craig Biggio.  That lead lasted maybe two minutes, as RBI doubles by Rusty Greer and Will Clark gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead after the 1st.  (Only Anderson’s throw nailing Mickey Tettleton at home averted a total disaster.)  In the 2nd, Alex Diaz tied it with an RBI single.  In the 3rd, Chris Hoiles took Kenny Rogers deep for three runs, and Leo Gomez added a solo shot for a 6-2 Orioles lead.  The Orioles struck again in the 4th, scoring once on a Biggio single (although the Rangers got some measure of revenge when Lance Johnson threw Anderson out at the plate.)   Rogers was still in the game in the 5th to record the first 1-2-3 inning by either pitcher; Orioles starter Scott Erickson finally got one of his own in the 6th.  Rafael Palmeiro led off the top of the 7th with his 11th homer of the season.  Rogers was still around in the 8th to give up a two-run double to Craig Grebeck that ended the scoring.

Game 2: BAA 11. TEA 8

Texas’ Albert Belle took Charles Nagy deep for two runs in the first.  In the 2nd, a solo shot by Palmeiro and a bases-clearing double by Gregg Zaun gave the Orioles a two-run lead; Zaun scored on a sac fly to make it 5-2.  Biggio singled in two more runs in the 4th, cancelled out in the bottom of the inning by a two-run blast from Todd Zeile.  The Orioles added three more in the 5th, but again the Rangers countered with another two-run homer by Belle and an RBI single by Clark to make it 10-7 before Nagy got a critical double play to stop the bleeding.  Ivan Rodriguez doubled in a run in the 7th to make it a two-run game, but Keith Lockhart singled in a run in the top of the 8th to put the O’s back up by 3.  Belle had a chance to tie the game in the 8th but couldn’t muster a third homer and struck out to end the last Rangers rally.

Game 3: BAA 7, TEA 6

A 1st inning single by Juan Gonzalez gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead, which jumped to 4-0 on Dean Palmer’s 2nd inning homer off Greg Swindell.  The Orioles finally scored in the 5th, although one run was all they could manage despite three walks and a double.  (Biggio killed the rally with a rare GIDP.)  Swindell’s bases-loaded wild pitch in the bottom of the 5th put Texas up 5-1.  In the 8th, Cal Ripken drove in a run with his first triple of the season and scored on a fielder’s choice to make it a two-run game… briefly, as Tettleton hit a solo shot to make it 6-3.  In the top of the 9th, after the Orioles loaded the bases, Lee Smith came in to strike out Biggio but then gave up a dramatic two-out grand slam to Palmeiro, and Orioles reliever Jesse Orosco made it stick.
