Subject: Reds @ Mets
The Reds put on our weekly clinic as to the relative value of talent vs. luck. It's simple -- when "luck" wins, the Reds lose. Throw in an even more abysmal performance than usual from the Arson Squad, and you've got a recipe for disaster.... Game 1: Any lefty pitcher who has to face the Cincy lineup should be put on immediate suicide watch -- but not if HAL has anything to say about where the dice land. The most talented offense in the N.L. continued to underachieve on all cylinders and made lefty junkballer Pete Schourek look almost unhittable. Some friendly split cards and a 2-out RBI put the Mets on top quickly, but the Reds rallied back in the 2nd to tie the score at 2 before rapping into a timely GIDP to extinguish the fire; the Reds would not score again this day. For a while, neither would the Mets. But in the 8th a super-surgical split card double by mighty Tim Bogar was followed by a free pass in order to bring up Fred McGriff, who took a couple of Jeff "Sambito" Brantley's offerings before walloping a 3-run gopher precisely at the split card limit. Final score: 5-2. CIN lefty David West deserved a better fate, but his offense could muster just 7 total bases and 1 walk and his bullpen brought the high octane. ===================================================================== Game 2: The most talented offense in the N.L. showed up for work today -- for half an inning. We abused NYN starter Bobby Jones (0.2 IP, 6 hits) and took a 5-0 lead before the fans were in their seats. A 5-0 lead being anything but safe for the Reds (scroll down a little for yet another example of that fact), a sequence of extremely beneficial split cards provided hit after hit after hit for the home team, and the margin narrowed considerably. Jose Rijo survived (barely) his usual 5-inning stint and exited with the score 6-3 in his favor. Reliever Dave Burba, decent card notwithstanding, was hosed badly as he pretty much always is. This time it was 8 hits in 3.2 IP, but one thing (the only thing) the Reds had going for them was that over 80% of the New York hits were singles which led to a bit more LOB (12) than RBI. Final score: the Reds eke out an 8-4 win. Burba coughed up 3 hits in the bottom of the 9th, nearly bringing the tying run to the plate before being lifted so that Brantley could record a 1-batter save. The Reds pitchers overcame TEN at-bats on which the Mets got the fortuitous split card for the best possible outcome on a hit chance. By way of contrast, Cincy batters had 6 good split cards (in 26 chances) in the entire series. ===================================================================== Game 3: NYN lefty Bill Pulsipher did as poorly as should be expected against the Reds, and we jumped out to another 5-0 lead. Meanwhile CIN scrub lefty Tim Fortugno was putting together a nice outing and took a shutout into the 7th inning. The shutout was soon lost and Fortugno's day came to an end along with it, but the damage was minimal and we took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the 8th. And also into the bottom of the 9th after we loaded the bases without scoring in the top of the inning. A funny thing happened there which seemed meaningless at the time, but of course loomed large in the outcome: Benito Santiago's single gave Chad Curtis an 85% opportunity to score from second. The Cincy manager waved the runner home but Curtis didn't get the message and parked at third base (a mouse with a mind of its own clicked on "hold" instead of "send"). These being the Reds, Curtis probably would have been out at the plate anyway -- and that's exactly what happened seconds later when Herb Perry hit into a timely 1-2-3 DP with the infield drawn in. No big deal, that extra run the Reds should have scored (if not more than one) couldn't possibly become important. The next time the Cincy bullpen passes up an opportunity to choke will be the first time. Jeff Shaw was today's victim, posting a delightful stat line of 2.2 IP, 7 hits and 4 runs. Those 4 runs all came, of course, in the bottom of the 9th and suddenly that early 5-0 lead was a 5-5 tie. With 2 on and 1 out in the bottom of the 10th, HAL apparently ran out of surgical dice rolls for our opponent's benefit and so he had Hector Carrasco uncork a diceless game-losing wild pitch on which Derrick May danced home from third. Final score: one more Cincy choke for the record books, 6-5 in 10. Alan |
