Despite lots of missed opportunities, the Orioles took two out of three exciting one-run games in Detroit.

 

Game 1:  BAA 7. DEA 6

 

The Orioles and Tigers had freakish mirror results in the first two innings: two-out doubles in the first, two-out singles in the 2nd, score 0-0.  In the top of the 3rd, a two-base error by Tony Fernandez and a passed ball by Barry Lyons gift-wrapped the first Baltimore run, but Fernandez atoned in the bottom of the frame by taking Greg Swindell deep for a 1-1 tie.  Fernandez went yard again in the 4th to put Detroit up 3-1, but the O’s went up 4-3 in the 5th on a Craig Biggio single and a two-run double by Rafael Palmeiro that chased Tigers starter John Doherty.  Again, the lead didn’t last long, as a two-out Cecil Fielder double tied it up 4-4 after five innings. In the 6th, the O’s again scored on a passed ball, and Curtis Goodwin added an RBI single for a two-run lead, but again the Tigers tied it up as Fernandez doubled in a run and scored on a single by Willie McGee.  In the 8th, Goodwin singled, stole second and third, and came home on a single by Biggio to put Baltimore up again, 7-6.  A tired Orioles bullpen made it stick.  One reason for the O’s win was that their hits were concentrated at the top of the lineup (1st 3 hitters went 8 for 13), while three-hit performances by Detroit’s Derek Bell and Fernandez were in the #3 and #9 spots in the lineup.

 

Game 2: DEA 3, BAA 2

 

Orioles starter Curt Schilling left five runners on in the first two innings, but Lou Whitaker got him with a solo shot in the 3rd for a 1-0 Detroit lead.  After Tigers starter Mark Gardner survived a bases-loaded jam in the 4th, the O’s were stymied until the 8th, when Biggio singled home Tony Longmire to tie the game.  However, the speedy Goodwin was thrown out at home on an unlikely play by Detroit’s Bobby Higginson.  It looked good for the O’s when Longmire singled in a run in the 9th, but closer Randy Myers faced two batters and gave up a double and a Fielder walkoff homer.

 

Game 3: BAA 2, DEA 1

 

The Orioles scored an improbable run in the second when Chris Hoiles tripled (giving him 2 for the season, vs. 1 for the real Hoiles in the entire 1995 season) and scored on a fielder’s choice.  Otherwise, both starters -- Baltimore’s Mike Mussina and Detroit’s David Wells -- were tough, each yielding just two hits in the first five innings.  Goodwin doubled in the 6th and scored on a single by Brady Anderson to make it 2-0.  Wells managed to retire the pinch-hitting Biggio with two outs and the bases loaded in the 7th, and Tigers reliever Mike Christopher did the same to Cal Ripken in the 8th.  In the bottom of the 8th, Higginson took Mussina deep to end the shutout.  Myers recorded a shaky save to give Mussina his 7th win of the season.
