Previous message                 Next message Message #: 31762 Message from: Charlie Steinhice Sent: Dec 13, 2014 Subject: BAA @ KCA Week 10 (plus Week 11 CM) (Thanks to the Commish for the extra time to complete.  Even by my standards, it’s been a crazy week on my end.)   The Orioles got a sweep in Kansas City.   Game 1: BAA 2, KCA 1 (11)   From the outside, it looked like a pitchers’ duel between KC’s Tom Gordon and Baltimore’s Charles Nagy through five scoreless innings, but only if you ignore the 6 hits and 5 walks versus only one 1-2-3 inning over that stretch.  Johnny Damon broke the tie in the 6th with an RBI single, but the O’s tied it in the top of the 7th on a Brady Anderson single.  Despite a combined 16 hits and 7 walks for the two teams, the game went to the 10th still tied at 1-1.  In the top of the 11th, a wild pitch helped set up Anderson’s two-out single that drove in the decisive run.  Baltimore left 13 on base but survived thanks in part to three double plays.  Lefties Anderson, Rafael Palmeiro, and Keith Lockhart went 10-for-15, while the rest of the Orioles went 3-for-29.   Game 2: BAA 13, KCA 2   Lockhart singled in a run in the 2nd to put the O’s up 1-0, but they could do no more despite getting runners to 2nd and 3rd with no outs.  The O’s were in the same position after Lockhart doubled in another run in the 4th, but this time Tony Longmire delivered a two-run single and Alex Diaz added a sac fly to give the Orioles a five-run lead.  The Royals cut it to 5-2 in the bottom of the inning, with all the damage done by lefties facing Baltimore southpaw Greg Swindell.  In the top of the 5th, Craig Grebeck and (again) Lockhart each doubled in a run, Longmire and Diaz added RBI singles, and a two-out, two-run single by Craig Biggio gave the O’s an 11-2 lead.  Palmeiro added a meaningless two-run homer in the 8th, and the huge lead allowed Swindell – who entered the game with a 7.71 ERA – to go the distance for his 3rd win.   Game 3: BAA 11, KCA 6   There was excitement, but no scoring, in both halves of the 1st.  In the top of the inning, Biggio was gunned down at the plate by Otis Nixon on an attempt at an inside-the-park HR.  Speed helped the Royals get runners on second and third with no outs, but Curt Schilling got two clutch strikeouts to help stifle the rally.  In the 2nd, Kansas City’s Andujar Cedeno ignored his .175 average and tripled in a run for a Royals lead.  Anderson tied it 1-1 with a 3rd inning single.  In the 4th, Royals starter hit Biggio to set up an RBI double by Cal Ripken to give the Orioles a one-run lead.  Palmeiro took Bohanon deep for two runs in the 6th; two outs later, Darren Lewis singled off reliever Steve Howe to make it 5-1.  But in the bottom of the 6th, Scott Leius homered off Curt Schilling to cut the Orioles lead to 5-3.  In the 8th, a solo homer by Baltimore’s Chris Hoiles made it 6-3, but a sac fly by Damon and a clutch two-out, two-run double by Brett Mayne to tie the game.  But in the top of the 9th, after a pinch-hit single by Lockhart, KC reliever Roger McDowell hit two straight batters to set up a two-run single by Biggio to break the tie. After a bases-loaded walk to Hoiles and RBI singles by Ripken and Longmire, the O’s blew it open with five runs and shut the Royals down in the bottom of the 9th.  Schilling had eleven strikeouts, but the win went to undeserving reliever Rusty Meacham, who blew the save in the 8th.    Lockhart ended the series 7-for-11 with two doubles, 4 runs, and 3 RBIs.
