Previous message                 Next message Message #: 31791 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Dec 20, 2014 Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals The most talented (and by far the most luckless) team in the league gives many Christmas gifts this week, and gets our expected lump of coal in return.  After a highly unlikely sweep at home, the Cubs rebound not at all on the road by winning once and choking thrice as the split cards have rarely been in a more "bah, humbug" mood against the Cubs.   LOB: CHN - 35, SLN - 24, as the quest for luckless immortality continues, and boy were those LOB ever costly this time around....     Game 1: The lone bright spot of the disastrous 1-6 week, as the Cubs LOB a mere 12 (7 in RISP with 2 outs) but eventually break a 1-1 tie with 3 in the 7th and go on to a 4-2 win.  Hi Bithorn scattered 11 hits and helped his own cause by not walking anyone.   Game 2: Another low-scoring affair most of the way, with the Cubs taking a 1-0 lead in the 5th.  It required exactly 1 batter for Tiny Bonham to forfeit that advantage, and both he and SLN starter Max Lanier departed with the score still 1-1 after 7.  So with 2 outs and the bases empty in the SLN 8th, HAL zeroed in on closer Mike Naymick's 6-column for a couple of free passes, then gave the Cardinals their second split card gopher of the day (while the Cubs did things like miss slim 1-19 chances at RBI hits).  Final score: 4-1, Naymick's first choke of the year -- but not his last of the series.   Game 3: Jesse Flores took a 1-0 lead into the 7th but with -- what else? -- 2 outs he was assaulted by a super surgical split card triple that put the Cubs down 2-1 and the next batter also followed with something the CHN hitters had to look up in the dictionary -- a "clutch hit".  Having done that, we matched that 3-run outburst before another of our patented rotten splits got a runner gunned at the plate.  Then came another 2-out choke in the 8th to tie the game, and the inevitable final choke in the bottom of the 9th.  Cubs lose again, 5-4.   Game 4: LOB: CHN - 10, SLN - 3.  Cubs batting average on split card chances at hits: 0 for 7 (.000).  Runners left in scoring position with 2 outs: Cubs 5, Cards 0.  Even with all that working against him, Cub starter Claude Passeau still had a 1-0 lead in the 8th.  Then a fortuitous (not for us, of course) split card gopher tied it up, and Naymick found choking to his liking and did it again in the bottom of the 9th -- on a split card where Stan Musial actually got the OUT instead of the gopher, but it magically became a hit because the CHN OF had no choice but to play in with 2 RISP and 0 outs.  Closer faces 3 batters, retires 0, and the Cubs blow it again at the last possible moment.  Final score: 2-1.   Alan
