Subject: Reds @ Rockies

The two most-talented offenses in the N.L. met in the most offensive ballpark anywhere.  But the Reds got fairly good pitching in 2 of the 3 contests and came one patented surgical bullpen meltdown away from a sweep....

Game 1: Although the Reds tallied a pair in the first inning, a pitchers duel ensued between John Smiley and Jim Abbott, and the score was only 2-1 heading into the 6th inning.  Three runs scored in the CIN 6th before an error by Andres Galarraga opened the door for several more.  Abbott was lifted 6 runs into the rally and Lance Painter permitted 3 more runners to cross the plate.

Tim Pugh earned his first save for Cincinnati by providing 4 innings of ultra-hittable relief.  Final score: 13-3.  All series long, Colorado's batters got every possible break from the dice (and a few that weren't possible) but only until runners got into scoring position, at which point they dried up most of the time.  Today the Rockies out-LOBbed the Reds 10-5 while the Reds scored 8 times (all of them unnecessary, of course) after 2 were out in an inning.  We should have saved a few of those for....

=========================================================================

Game 2: A team which scores 9 times will normally find that sufficient to win a ballgame, and CIN's Jose Rijo left after 6 innings with what appeared to be an adequate lead.

But when costly first-round pick Dave Burba enters a game, the dice *always* heat up.  Burba was perfection today: 3 batters faced, 0 batters retired, 3 runs scored.  Pugh then showed that expecting 2 consecutive days of magic wasn't too likely (5 batters faced, 1 batter retired, 4 runs scored), and Hector Carrasco put another match to the gasoline.

Reds choke in our inimitable manner, 13-9, as the home team smashed 35 total bases, most of them during their 9-run 7th inning debacle.  And they still out-LOBbed the Reds, 10-3.

=========================================================================

Game 3: Yet another outing where it appeared that the unluckiest team in the league would play just well enough to lose, and forfeit a stunningly effective outing from a scrub starting pitcher.  That pitcher was Tim Fortugno, who left after 7 innings on the unhappy end of a 1-0 score.

The Reds were in sabotage defense mode all day, with Fortugno himself not exactly helping his own cause with an error and a timely wild pitch -- without which the sac fly which put him down a run could never have occurred.

The Cincy offense finally caught up to the Rockies -- in terms of leaving runners stranded everywhere -- and put up 3 more LOB in the 8th after loading the bases with 0 outs, but a Curtis Leskanic wild pitch precisely negated Fortugno's and we were able to score just that once before the heart of the order racked up a whole lot of LOB with RISP.

The 1-1 tie held until the 11th when Cincy catcher Eddie Taubensee (of all people) stole second base with 2 outs and scored from there on Barry Larkin's single.

Wasting no time, the Reds quickly supplied Colorado with the tying run via another sac fly but the offense exploded in the top of the 12th for 5 runs on 6 hits.

Even Jeff 'Sambito' Brantley, the most devastating (to his own team) reliever in the majors:

- very good card
- no luck at all
- 7 blown saves (leads the N.L.)
- 7 relief losses (one behind the leader)

....couldn't blow a lead that large though he was the one who got all choked up in the 11th.  Final score: 7-2 in 12 innings.  Luckless Eric Anthony amazingly homered during the final outburst, completing his 1 for 6 day which *raised* his average to .143.
