Subject: Reds @ Mets

A close series between two evenly-matched teams.

Game 1: Lucky Jim McGlothlin was done in again by his teammates' lousy
clutch hitting, and his own miserable misfortune. The Mets struck quickly
for two runs in the second inning on a Jim Spencer double and a Ken Boswell
groundout. Cincinnati was getting their chances off of Jerry Koosman, but
wasting them as usual. Finally in the fourth, Pat Corrales managed a sac
fly, and a Tony Perez single tied the game in the fifth.

Which was just in time for Johnny Bench to punish his ex-mates with a 2-run
homer in the sixth, after which neither team scored again. Koosman (4-3)
scattered 10 hits in the victory, while McGlothlin's record fell to 3-5 as
the Reds outstranded the Mets by the score of 8-4.

Game 2: In full panic mode by now, the Reds turned to ace Tom Seaver in
order to avert the impending sweep (yeah I realize it's only game 2; I know
an impending sweep when I see one). The Reds offense made hasty work of Ray
Sadecki, banishing him in the second inning with the score 8-0. Four of
those 8 runs were unearned, thanks to Sadecki's own error. Cincinnati
touched Grant Jackson for another run in the third, sprinting away to a 9-0
lead.

9-0 after three, Seaver on the mound......

No lead is EVER safe when the Reds are in the field. The comeback began in
the fourth when runs scored on a sac fly, a groundout and a clutch single by
Wayne Garrett. 9-3. Going into the ninth, New York had only been able to
slice one more run off the lead. A laboring Seaver began the ninth by
sandwiching one out around 3 more baserunners, at which point he was finally
yanked.

Seaver's line for the game would show 8 hits and *8* walks in 8.1 IP.
Relievers Jerry Johnson and Don Gullett got the baserunners moving quickly,
but the Mets ran out of chances after making the score 9-6. LOB: Mets 12,
Reds 2, in a rare reversal of form.

Game 3: Gary Nolan took the mound against ERA leader Jim McAndrew, and
benefitted from the offense scoring early again. Bob Burda, subbing for Lee
"Dr. Strangeglove" May at first base, shockingly delivered a 2-run homer in
the third. A key passed ball by Jerry Grote allowed the Mets to come right
back with an unearned tally in the home half of the frame.

Cincinnati got all the rest of their runs in the sixth when Tony Perez
launched a 2-run shot, and Dave Concepcion later tripled home Jerry Grote,
who had doubled with two outs. Unable to deal with the 4-run lead, Nolan
gave up a 2-run bomb to Cleon Jones in the seventh, making the score 5-3,
which fortunately for the Reds is how it would end.

But not without a small amount of drama: the Mets began their ninth with
Jones reaching on a Joe Hoerner error, followed by a walk to Bud Harrelson
(here we go again!), but Hoerner buckled down and retired three consecutive
pinch-hitters to finish the contest. Cincy outhit the Mets 11-5 (31-21 for
the series), but Nolan's wildness ensured plenty of opportunities
nonetheless.
