2 of the top pitching staffs matched up in this series. Padres travel up the coast and somehow sweep the first place Dodgers. Both teams were pulling high split cards all series long. (20 splits of 18 or higher with just 9 of 5 or lower). game 1: Dishman didn't look like he would last long as he gave up a walk and 3 hits (good for 2 runs) in the first inning. He settled down and allowed just 2 hits and 1 walk in the next 6 innings. Gwynn singled and scored on a Caminiti double in the 4th to get SD on the board. Finley had a 2 run 2 out single in the 7th to put the Padres up 3-2. Padres showed they can master the weird run allowed on the road just as well as at home. While not quite 3 wild pitches in a row, Fossas hit 2 batters in a row to load the bases before a sac fly tied the game in the 8th. In the 9th, Gwynn blooped a 2 out x play single over Karros' head at first but was tagged after turning the base. Luckily the go ahead run had scored. Florie set the Dodgers down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to save the 4-3 win. game 2: Caminiti homered in the 2nd and had a 2 run single in the 3rd as the Padres went up 4-0. (the 3 outs were a bad bunt, and splits of 19 and 20). Dodgers got 3 singles in the 4th but didn't score thanks to a pickoff. Dodgers strung together 5 straight hits in the 7th to score 3 times (hit #2 was an x play double to gwynn). Cangelosi jumped on a Honeycutt fastball in the 9th for his first homer of the year to make the final 5-3. Dodgers got a single and double in the 9th but didn't score. game 3: Padres got 3 runs on just 1 hit (Gwynn getting a 17 on his 1-16 double chance) in the first. Nomo managed to walk 4 (3 in a row after Gwynn's single) and Flaherty had a sac fly. Dodgers got a run back on 2 hits in the bottom of the inning. Those were the only 2 hits Petkovsek allowed in his 6 innings. Finley added a 2 run single through the drawn in infield in the 7th and Vince Coleman homered in the bottom of the inning to finish the scoring as SD won 5-2. game 4: Dennis Cook took the mound for SD and had his best outing of the year. He took a 1 hit shutout into the 7th before allowing 2 doubles for a run (all 3 hits off his card). Padres used 4 singles in the first to take a 2-0 lead. In the 8th Gwynn and Caminiti led off with singles to put runners on the corners. After the dreaded gb(B) (on a x play as well) nailed Gwynn at the plate, Valdes balked in the run to make it 3-1. That run proved big as the Dodgers got a walk and 3 hits (matching the 3 in the first 8 innings) to tie the game in the 9th. Gwynn had an rbi double in the 12th to give SD the 4-3 win. Phil Clark had a chance to blow the game open but got a 15 on his 1-9 hr chance. Botchler saved his 3rd straight game for the sweep. For the series the Padres bullpen had 2 wins, 4 saves and 2 blown saves. |
