Subject: BAA @ MLA Week 14 (plus Week 15 CM)
If you like good pitching, cover your eyes when they show the highlights of this series. Despite being outhit 45-40, the Orioles managed to win two of three in Milwaukee. Game 1: BAA 12, MLA 10 Baltimore’s Mark Smith got a clutch three-run double with two out in the top of the 1st. Not to be outdone, the Brewers loaded the bases against Greg Swindell with no outs, thanks in part to Pat Listach stealing second on a failed hit-and-run attempt. After RBI singles from John Jaha and Kevin Seitzer, Fernando Vina tied it with a sac fly, Mickey Morandini doubled in the go-ahead run, and BJ Surhoff tacked on a two-run single. Jeff Cirillo, who’d missed the hit-and-run attempt, singled in one more run to give the Brewers a 7-3 lead after just one inning. Evidently Milwaukee starter Sid Roberson couldn’t stand a comfortable lead; the Orioles made it 7-6 in the 2nd thanks to Darren Lewis’s two-run single and a fielder’s choice. Both starters were gone by the top of the 3rd, when a solo Smith homer tied the game. It remained tied until a Surhoff single in the 5th gave the Brewers a one-run lead, although the inning ended with an unsuccessful delayed attempt to steal home. In the top of the 6th, Lewis doubled home the tying run, Craig Biggio and Chris Hoiles singled in two more runs, and an unlikely two-run triple by Cal Ripken put the Orioles ahead 12-8. Things got tense in the bottom of the 9th as Morandini tripled in a run and scored on a Surhoff single, bringing pinch-hitter Greg Vaughn to the plate as the tying run. If he’d drawn a split card of 6 or below, he’d have tied it up with a homer, but it was not in the cards. The usually shaky Orioles bullpen did a creditable job, allowing just 3 runs in 7 1/3 IP. Game 2: MLA 11, BAA 8 Only blind luck (a roll of 1-5) helped Baltimore’s Brady Anderson gun down Vina at home to preserve a scoreless 1st. The Brewers had better luck in the 2nd, taking a 4-0 lead in a rally keyed by a two-run Surhoff double. In the 4th, newcomer Mike Pagliarulo singled in the first Orioles run, but the Brewers put on an extra-base-hits parade (RBI doubles from Darryl Hamilton, Jaha, and Jim Thome, followed by a two-run Vaughn homer) chased Curt Schilling and put Milwaukee up 9-1. In the top of the 7th, a sac fly by Tony Pena and a two-run Biggio double cut the lead to 9-5, but Surhoff and Jaha got two of them back with RBI singles in the bottom of the inning. The O’s chipped away with a two-run Tony Pena double in the 8th, then a Pagliarulo double and a sac fly in the 9th, to achieve a more respectable three-run loss. Game 3: BAA 7, MLA 5 (10) Bad start for the Orioles in the 1st: Anderson drew a leadoff walk, tried to steal, was thrown out (on a 90% chance of success) right before Curtis Goodwin doubled. But Biggio doubled in Goodwin and scored on a fielder’s choice, and a passed ball gave the Orioles a quick 3-0 lead. In the 2nd, Biggio singled in another run, and a sac fly by Rafael Palmeiro made it 5-0, but Surhoff homered to get those two runs back. The Brewers loaded the bases with one out in the 3rd but could only push one run across on an RBI groundout. The game remained 5-3 until the bottom of the 8th. Because of the depleted Baltimore bullpen, a tired Mike Mussina stayed in and gave up two hits; the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead, giving up a bases-loaded walk and a game-tying sac fly by Surhoff. The O’s missed a golden opportunity in the 9th when Pena couldn’t get a bunt down and grounded into a double play, again right before a single that would have scored a runner from 2nd. But in the 10th, Leo Gomez – who’d entered as a defensive replacement – came through with a decisive two-run double, and despite being past his usual pitch count, closer Randy Myers struck out the side for his 4th win. The final carnage for three games: 25 walks, 3 HBP, and 85 hits – including 3 homers, 3 triples, and *23* doubles. Biggio led the hit parade, going 9-for-13 with five runs and 5 RBIs, but Surhoff went 7-for-12 with 10 RBIs (at least 3 in each game.) |
