Subject: Reds @ Braves

The Reds emerge from the Launching Pad with one easy win, one can't-catch-even-one-break loss and one patented bullpen choke by a player making his Arson Squad debut (and fitting in with the rest of the luckless losers immediately)....

Game 1: CIN starter Jose Rijo doesn't exactly have limitless usage available in 1995, so it seemed logical to remove him after 7 innings even though he was pitching a shutout -- but had only the slimmest possible lead.

Sadly, no move to the Cincy bullpen is *ever* "logical" and free agent pickup Andres Berumen made his major league debut in a spectacular blaze of rotten, yet typical, luck.  Berumen got one out without actually retiring a batter (walk, CS) before a pair of singles and 3 SB tied the game in the blink of an eye, with the opponent's OBP still being a perfect 1.000.

Berumen finally retired a batter to make it 2 outs in the inning, but that was simply to increase the dramatic effect of the game-losing gopher which followed.  Final score: 3-1, as the Reds welcomed our newest arsonist to the fold.  It's nice to have depth.

==============================================================================

Game 2: ATN lefty Steve Avery has struggled this season, and things did not improve for him today.  Subjected to a quick hook after the Reds took a 4-1 lead in the 3rd, the Braves emptied the bullpen by using 5 relievers and 1 starter to finish out what became a 10-4 win for the visitors.

Tim Pugh tossed an 11-hitter which featured 3 ATN gophers and the hapless starter was not sharp in any way, but 10 runs of support often make a winner out of even the most determined loser.

Reggie Sanders homered twice during the rout and drove in 6 runs.  Using what little clutch ability we have at the most irrelevant time, 9 of the 10 Cincy runs scored after 2 were out in an inning.

==============================================================================

Game 3: Chuck Finley mopped up in game 2 with one desultory inning (2 hits, 1 run) yet was remarkably refreshed just hours later as he took the mound as a starter.  The dice surgically found the out in every loaded column in which the Cincy batters rolled (as well as all the empty ones), allowing the lefty starter to rack up 11 K's in 7 shutout innings.

Like Rijo, Finley also left with the slimmest possible lead.  But with all the arsonists confined to the visitors' bullpen as usual, a pair of Atlanta relievers supplied two letter-perfect innings to seal up the 2-0 win.

The 1-0 lead became 2-0 in the bottom of the 8th when Cincy reliever Mike Mimbs performed the 'Perfect Sambito' (1 batter faced, 1 critical gopher allowed).  Both runs today occurred via fortuitous split cards on gopher chances for the home team, as there was no other offense generated by either side.

CIN starter Brian Keyser worked 7 innings just as Finley had, and permitted even fewer baserunners than Finley, but took the luckless loss.

Alan
