Subject: Reds @ Pirates

A playoff preview of sorts -- assuming the Reds even make the playoffs -- not because of the identity of the opponent but because of the way the team sleepwalked through these 4 games and hastened quickly towards the exit.  We made Pittsburgh's undermanned pitching staff and worst defense in the league (which converted over 80% of x-plays in this series) look like All-Stars from start to finish....

Game 1: An outstanding performance from an actual All-Star pitcher (John Smiley) narrowly avoided being wasted as Pittsburgh's Esteban Loaiza held the most talented offense in the N.L. to just 3 hits in 5.1 IP and fanned 7 hapless Cincy batters along the way.

We finally erased the 1-0 deficit when the Pirates foolishly cut off throws from the outfield to home plate and conceded 2 runs (you *always* take a chance against the Reds where split cards are concerned -- don't worry, they figured that out in game 3) and escaped with a 2-1 win as the Reds LOBbed 9, 6 of them in scoring position.  Smiley went the distance on a 5-hitter, with just 1 walk and 12 strikeouts.

=========================================================================================

Game 2: Back to typical Cincy form in what was probably the final start of Jose Rijo's career, as it featured 11 LOB, 3 timely rally-killing DPs and -- but of course -- a patented bullpen choke.

Rijo was surgically battered for 10 baserunners and 5 runs in just 5 innings, but the Reds took Rijo off the hook when Jeff Huson singled home the tying run in the 7th.

To say that free agent pickup Andres Berumen has "underachieved" is to make a grotesque understatement of the facts.  After another outing from hell today (1 IP, 5 baserunners, 3 runs and a well-earned loss) this reliever who should be permitting less than 8 hits per 9 IP is rolling along at a mere 37.8 hits/9 IP.

A trio of fellow arsonists followed our new ace to the mound, but by then there was nothing left to burn.  Final score: 8-5.  Ex-Red Joe Oliver had himself a nice 4 for 5 day with 2 doubles & 4 RBI.

=========================================================================================

Game 3: Cincy scrub Brian Keyser had another solid complete-game outing, but Pirate scrub Rick White had by far the better of the luck by getting the Reds to LOB 9 more and it would have been 11 except the other 2 were gunned down at home plate.  Reds lose by exactly those two split cards (and numerous other adverse ones), 4-2.

Joe Oliver continued to murder his ex-mates, his 3-run gopher in the 4th providing the vast majority of the Pittsburgh runs.  The other run came via another surgical split card gopher off the bat of weakling infielder Carlos Garcia.

The Reds had a RISP and the tying run at the plate with 0 outs in the 9th, but chose that point in time to officially surrender.

=========================================================================================

Game 4: CIN #1 draft pick Mike Mimbs has put up decent stats this season, but you'd never know it from his won-loss record.  Mimbs had his best outing of the season today, recording his first complete game, and better than that an actual victory by the score of 2-1.  The lackluster lefty tossed a 3-hitter and came one gopher bite away from a shutout.

Mimbs got next to nothing in the way of support, but what he did get proved to be barely sufficient.  And unlikely too, with the 2 Cincinnati runs being provided by a 2-run homer from Eric Anthony. No player in the majors with as many AB as Anthony is underachieving his card by as much as the luckless CIN outfielder.  Anthony's bountiful 1 for 4 performance today lifted his average all the way to .149, a figure which is probably exceeded by 75% of the *pitchers* in the N.L.
