Subject: Twins at Milwaukee
The make their first trip to County Stadium to play the Brewers, and get
great individual performances from Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, Jim Perry,
and Bert Blyleven as they take 3 of 4.
Game One:
Twins 9 Brewers 4
The Twins Ken Holtzman gets his 7th win despite giving up 4 runs in six
innings as Tom Hall and Ted Abernathy come on to shut the Brew Crew down.
Cal Koonce came on in relief of John Gelnar (George Brunet started) and gave
up a three run homer to Harmon Killebrew after walking Tony Oliva. It was
Killebrew's second homer of the day and gave him 5 RBI on the day. Killer's
second blast proved to be the game winner. The Twins had 16 hits to the
Brewers 5.
Game Two:
Twins 5 Brewers 0
The Twins rookie pitcher Bert Blyleven got his 4th start of the season and
shut out the Brewers on a 7 hitter for a 5-0 win. Blyleven showed an
incredible curve ball that danced across the corners of the plate all night
as he racked up 13 K's. Back up catcher Paul Ratliff hit his first homer of
the year for the Twins.
Game Three:
Twins 3 Brewers 0
Jim Perry took a no hitter into the seventh inning as he one hit the Brewers
on his way to 3-0 win. Perry - who earned his 7th win - walked one and stuck
out four and gave up only a groundball single to Johnny Briggs in a
masterful performance. Meanwhile, the Brewers Marty Pattin had a gem of a
game himself as he 8 hit the Twins and gave up only 2 earned runs in taking
his 7th loss on the year. Tony Oliva was the big stick for the Twins going 3
for 4 with a homer and 2 RBI.
Game Four:
Brewers 5 Twins 4
The Brewers took 11 innings, but they finally won a game in this series Greg
Walewski got his first win of the year. The lead changed hands four times as
both teams fought hard. Both starters were gone after six. Tom Hall pitched
shut out ball in the 7th, 8th, and 9th, while the Brewers bullpen held the
Twins scoreless. In the bottom of the 11th with Stan Williams on for the
Twins, Johnny Callison led off with a walk. He was then singled to third by
Mike Hegan. Two batters later, weak hitting Jack Heidemann, the Brewers SS,
hit a slow roller to second. Twins 2B Paul Popovich charged the ball, picked
it up bare handed, and threw it home. There, Twins catcher George Mitterwald
was blocking the plate. The throw came in on the mark. But, as Mitterwald
spun to tag the sliding Callison, he missed barely as Callison executed a
perfect hook slide around the block and into the plate, scoring the winning
run. |
