Not sure how they are doing it, but the Padres continue to play well and come one monstrous choke away from sweeping the Rockies in Colorado. This also keep the NL West a hot mess with the last place team just 1.5 games out of first, as close to first as any other 2nd place team in the league.

game 1: With auto bp singles and homers you knew it was not going to be low scoring. Teams traded first inning runs before a quiet 2nd and 3rd inning. SD then sent 11 men to the plate in the 4th (1 less than the first 3 innings combined) and scored 8 times. Ausmus and Gwynn had 2 run singles and Caminiti capped the inning with a 3 run homer. Surely the Padres couldn't blow a 9-1 lead could they? Of course they could and did. In the 5th, Colorado sent 11 men to the plate but could only score 6 times to cut the lead to 2. 10 of the 11 batters rolled on their own card so not much Petkovsek could do about the carnage. Walker had a 2 run double and Galaragga a 2 run homer. A double and 3 walks in the 7th cut the lead to 1. Hoffman got the first 2 outs of the 9th before Hubbard singled. Burks came in to pinch hit and got a double 1 in the process. Split of 1 for his 1st homer of the year to give Colorado the wild 10-9 win. All this came after Discarsina rolled a 1-7  in the top of the inning which was literally the only out in the column thanks to the auto bp singles.

game 2: This one didn't start much differently than game 1. Finley opened the game with a single, stole second and came around on a couple ground outs. Colorado opened with 2b,2b,1b,2b to score twice (the 1b was caught stealing). Flaherty homered to open the second to tie the game and then hit a 3 run shot in the 3rd to put the Padres up 5-2. Walker's 2 run homer in the bottom of the inning made it 5-4. One team then stopped scoring while the other was just warming up. Flaherty's rbi double in the 5th put the Padres in front for good and back to back doubles in the 7th gave them another run. Finley and Caminiti had 2 run homers in the 8th. In the 9th Finley had an rbi single and Discarsina a 2 run homer to make the final 14-4. SD had 20 hits for the game including 9 doubles (many missed 3b opportunities) and 5 homers and slugged almost 1.000 for the game (44 tb in 45 ab).

game 3: Padres loaded the bases with one out in the first but a fly out and runner thrown out at the plate ended that threat. Colorado scored 3 in the first on just 1 hit (a 1b 1-3), thanks to 3 walks and an error. 4 singles got the Padres just 1 run in the 3rd as they left the bases loaded. 2 doubles and a single got the Rockies 2 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd for a 4-1 lead. SD 5th started with 1b,wp,1b,wp and a double before the first out was made. Cangelosi's 2nd rbi single of the game tied the game. Galaragga hit a 2 out homer in the 7th and Colorado took that 5-4 lead into the 9th. SD finally got some luck on the dice/split front. Finley and Gomez opened with singles and then Gwynn and Caminiti followed with literally the same roll. 5-5 (triple 1-5 flyout) and split of 1. Gwynn got the triple but Caminiti settled for a double. Williams followed with a double and Cangelosi walked before wild pitch, strikeout, wild pitch brought in the 5th run of the inning and a 9-5 SD win.

game 4: Back to back single+errors by a 3e8 (both on the same 5-7 roll) and a 2 out double by Finley gave SD a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Gwynn tripled (2nd in 3 ab's after not having one in the first 102 games of the season) and eventually scored on a 2 out single by Ausmus to make it 3-0. Colorado finally got on board in the 6th on a single+error and single. Padres opened the 8th with a double and single but could not get a run across. That almost proved fatal. Hoffman came on and rather than wait until 2 outs, immediately ran into trouble. Single, walk, walk loaded the bases with no outs but Hoffman settled down. A pop up was followed by a fc grounder that cut the lead to 1 but Hoffman got Leyritz to flyout to end the game.
