Clinging to their slim playoff hopes, the Orioles took three of four at Fenway.

Game 1: BAA 7, BOA 4

Before Boston starter Tim Wakefield retired a batter, he’d already given up a two-run single to Rafael Palmeiro.  Jose Lind singled in a Boston run in the second to make it 2-1, and a rare Craig Biggio error in the 3rd helped set up Jose Canseco’s two-run homer off Scott Erickson to give the Red Sox a 3-2 lead.  Baltimore retook the lead in the 5th thanks to a two-run double by Mike Pagliarulo, and Brady Anderson made it 5-3 with an RBI single in the top of the 6th.  Pagliarulo singled in another run in the 7th, and Palmeiro and Lee Tinsley traded solo shots in the 9th.  Palmeiro finished the game 5-for-5 and was just a triple short of the cycle.

Game 2: BOA 12, BAA 7

In the first inning, Biggio took Chris Haney deep to give the O’s a quick 1-0 lead, but James Mouton countered with a two-out, two-run single to put the Red Sox up 2-1.  Baltimore retook the lead in the 2nd on two-out RBI singles by Curtis Goodwin and Alex Diaz, and Cal Ripken’s two-run HR in the 3rd made it 5-2.  But in the 4th, after Mike Greenwell had doubled in a run, John Valentin touched up rookie Orioles pitcher Rick Krivda for a grand slam and a 7-5 Bosox lead.  Chris Hoiles homered in the 5th to make it a one-run game.  Baltimore had a golden opportunity in the 7th, with a runner on 2nd, no outs, and Biggio at the plate, but Biggio hit into a 6-4 lineout DP.  Orioles reliever Jeff Juden served up a two-run gopher ball to Mo Vaughn in the bottom of the 7th and a three-run version to Bill Haselman in the 8th to make the score 12-6.  The O’s made a little noise in the 9th but could only muster one run on a single by Diaz.  Ducks on the pond made the difference in this game – each team had 3 HRs, but Boston’s were worth 9 runs to just 4 for Baltimore’s.

Game 3: BAA 5, BOA 3

Underachiever Greg Swindell faced off against Red Sox ace Roger Clemens in this one.  The game was scoreless until the 4th, when a throwing error by Boston’s Wayne Kirby turned a probable sac fly into two runs, followed by back-to-back wild pitches that gave the Orioles a 3-0 lead.  But in the 5th, Swindell served up a three-run gopher ball to Tim Naehring for the tie.  Ripken countered with a decisive two-run HR in the 6th.  From there on, the Orioles just held on by their fingernails as the bullpen bent – a lot – but didn’t break.  Orioles closer Randy Myers put the tying runs on in the 9th before the defense bailed him out with a game-ending double play.  The Red Sox outhit the Orioles but left 12 on base.

Game 4: BAA 8, BOA 5

For the third time in four games, Baltimore scored in the top of the 1st, as Biggio doubled in a run and Ripken singled him in to make it 2-0.  An RBI single by Tinsley in the 3rd cut it to 2-1. In the top of the 4th, light-hitting Manny Alexander singled in two runs, and Mark Smith followed with his 3rd HR of the season to give Baltimore a 6-1 lead and chase Red Sox starter Dilson Torres.  The O’s got a weird run in the 6th when Jose Canseco mishandled a Leo Gomez double and allowed Gomez to come all the way home.  Orioles starter Ben McDonald was cruising until the 6th, when he walked two batters to set up a three-run homer by Greenwell.  Ripken went deep in the 7th to make the lead 8-4.  In the 8th, the Red Sox loaded the bases and scored a run on a Tony Eusebio single before the O’s turned a critical double play to escape the inning.
