Previous message                 Next message Message #: 32105 Message from: Charlie Steinhice Sent: Mar 1, 2015 Subject: BAA @ TOA Week 20 (plus Week 21 CM) Blue Jays and Orioles split a four-game series where the score was always 7-3 (+/-1 for each digit.)   Game 1: TOA 8, BAA 2   Toronto’s Tony Phillips started the scoring with a solo HR in the 1st.  In the third, Alex Gonzalez tripled and scored on a single by Carlos Delgado, who with the help of a Rafael Palmeiro error eventually came around on a Roberto Alomar single to make it 3-0.  Domingo Cedeno added a two-run jack in the bottom of the 5th.   Thanks in part to a Gonzalez error, the Orioles finally got two runs off Toronto starter Ken Menhart in the 6th, but they were quickly erased by a three-run Joe Carter homer, and from there forward the O’s pretty much just rolled over and played dead.    Game 2: TOA 7, BAA 2   Baltimore’s Ben McDonald quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the 1st and walked in the first run; after a Carter single and a sac fly, the Jays were up 3-0.  Phillips made that 4-0 in the 2nd with another solo homer.  Phillips also scored a freebie in the 6th (error, steal, wild pitch, Alomar single) and doubled in one of two runs in the 7th.  Pat Hentgen ignored his season stats, holding the Orioles hitless until two outs in the 6th.  He took a two-hit shutout into the 9th before giving way to Jim Gott, who allowed two inherited runners to score the only Orioles runs of the night.   Game 3: BAA 7, TOA 3   The Orioles got off to a good start in the 1st, putting runners on second and third with no outs, but could only manage one run on an RBI groundout.  They had better luck in the 2nd, as Manny Alexander doubled in two runs and scored on an Brady Anderson single for a 4-0 lead, although the O’s still left the bases loaded.  In the 3rd, the usually ineffective Alexander doubled in another run, but Toronto got on the board with yet another solo homer by Phillips.  Craig Biggio singled in the top of the 4th to make it 6-1.  The O’s failed to score in the 5th, leaving the bases loaded again, and Alomar got the Blue Jays back into the game by doubling in a run and scoring on a sac fly.  But the Orioles bullpen was unusually effective and helped ace Mike Mussina nail down his 11th win.  A double by Mike Pagliarulo in the 6th accounted for the last Orioles run.   Game 4: BAA 7, TOA 3   Brady Anderson led off the game with a homer, but RBI doubles by Ed Sprague and Paul Molitor gave Toronto a 2-1 1st inning lead.  In the 2nd, Pagliarulo homered to tie it and Anderson singled in a run for a 3-2 Baltimore lead.  Palmeiro took Paul Quantrill deep in the 3rd for two more runs, and a two-base error by Carter in the 4th set up Curtis Goodwin’s RBI single to make it a four run lead.  In the 6th, Alexander stunned his teammates with his second homer of the year (which took a split card of 1 to happen.)  Two double plays made Orioles starter Scott Erickson look more effective than he actually pitched, and the only damage Toronto could muster against the Orioles bullpen was a solo shot by Carter in the 8th.  Phillips couldn’t manage to make it four straight games with a homer, but his streak meant Alomar’s 9-for-17 performance in this series almost passed without notice.
