Subject: Reds @ Giants

The Reelin' Reds struggle through three close games with the Giants, but come out slightly on top in the end....

Game 1: Jaime Navarro so thorough throttled the Cincy offense that we had all of 1 at bat with a runner in scoring position all day (and failed to deliver, natch).  CIN starter Scott Kamieniecki permitted only 5 hits to the Giants in 7 IP, a decent enough performance if you overlook the fact that 2 of the 5 were gophers and the fact that he was squeezed for 8 free passes as well.

But the man who really stole the show for the victorious home squad was Glenallen Hill.  Not only did the stumblebum outfielder make two spectacular catches to thwart Cincy rallies, he came up with a pair of surgical split card hits (double, gopher) a surgical walk on a roll of 3-12 (of course he came around to score) and almost single-handedly carried his team to a 4-2 win.

Hal Morris homered for the Reds in the second to give us a 1-0 lead that lasted less than a third of an inning.

Game 2: The Reds outhit the Giants for the second straight game, but CIN pitchers issued a plethora of free passes for the second straight day (16 walks by the Reds to just 1 for SFN pitchers so far in the series) and had to rely on the Giants LOBbing 10 runners in order to win by the score of 6-5 in 11 innings.

Having taken -- and blown -- an early lead for the second straight day, the Reds finally erased the deficit with a 3-run 8th that gave us a 5-4 lead.  Newly-acquired catcher Chad Kreuter had delivered 2 of those 3 runs with a liner off of SFN 3B Eddie Perez' glove which resulted in a pair of unearned runs.

Combining with reliever Andres Berumen's wildness in the bottom of the 9th, Kreuter conspired to give the gift right back (2-base error on a bunt + a run-scoring wild pitch) and we proceeded to overtime, where Barry Larkin's solo home run gave the visitors a rare 1-run win.

Scrub pitchers Jarvis & Berumen held the Giants to 6 hits in 10 IP (and just 1 gopher) but walked 8.  Berumen allowed 0 earned runs in the 4-inning effort, and got the win when Hector Carrasco put down a mini-rally in the bottom of the 11th.

Game 3: San Francisco's Jaime Brewington continued his massive overachievement, lowering his ERA to 2.16 by allowing the Reds just 1 run in 5.1 IP.  But Cincy's Brian Williams had one of his best starts ever, even as the Reds' offense kept the score close by stranding 12 runners.

Williams struck out 12 Giants and tossed a 4-hitter as his team broke a late 1-1 tie at long last by finally failing to choke in the clutch -- just barely.  An error by Robbie Thompson on what should have been the third out of the 8th inning kept the frame alive and Herbert Perry and Barry Larkin followed with tie-breaking singles.  Final score: 3-1.

With the Cincy offense choking away left and right, the light-hitting Williams not only had to find a way to retire the Giants, but was also required to provide his own offensive support and his second inning single plated our only run up to the late rally.  The Giants had taken a 1-0 lead 3 batters into the contest on a single, sacrifice bunt and another single.

Williams also came up with a clutch defensive x-play (he's an e0, but for the Reds that almost always means "single past the mound") to end the San Fran rally in the 3rd inning after catcher Benito Santiago allowed a passed ball and wild pitch seconds apart to put a runner at third base.
