Subject: Montreal at Chicago Week 9
After a stellar week 8, we couldn't wait to play week 9. Ouch. Wish we had waited. Expos play like...well, the Expos. No offense, little pitching, no defense. Cubs win 3 of 4. New manager included for week 10. Game 1 Jim Colborn allowed Tony Soprano to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Chicago NL Cubs destroyed the Montreal Expos by a score of 12 to 1 at Wrigley Field. Montreal was unable to recover after Chicago NL went ahead in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they tallied 4 runs on 3 hits. That early scoring was all that Colborn(2-0) needed. Chicago NL had a total of 13 hits for the game. Carl Morton(3-5) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 innings of work. Game 2 Fergie Jenkins had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and he pitched 9 strong innings at Wrigley Field where the Chicago NL Cubs beat the Montreal Expos by the score of 5 to 0. Jenkins(6-6) was virtually untouchable. He allowed just 4 hits and no walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.10 to 2.86. Chicago NL rapped out 7 hits for the afternoon. The losing pitcher was Steve Renko(6-4). He allowed 7 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. 'He had his 'A' game today,' Tony Soprano said of Jenkins. 'Very impressive performance.' Game 3 One run was the difference at Wrigley Field as the Chicago NL Cubs defeated the Montreal Expos 4 to 3. Chicago NL came up with 2 runs in the 2nd inning with the help of 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Cesar Gutierrez who made the crowd happy when he tripled which was good for two runs. Montreal threatened in the 9th but Chicago NL was able to put down the rally. Joe Decker(5-2) got the win allowing 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Dick Selma was credited with his 8th save. Joel Horlen(2-3) was given the loss. He was touched for 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. Game 4 Shortstop Luis Aparicio had 3 base hits as the Montreal Expos defeated the Chicago NL Cubs 7 to 3 at Wrigley Field. Chicago NL fell behind quickly as the Montreal offense came through in the first inning with 2 runs. Alex Johnson kicked off the action when he was hit by a pitch. Aparicio came next and he laced a base-hit. Aparicio took second on the throw. Rusty Staub then would ground out scoring a run. Dalton Jones came up and he would ground out scoring the final run of the inning. Jack Aker was great in relief and recorded his 18th save. The win went to Mike Wegener(3-1) who allowed 1 run in 5 and 1/3 innings. Larry Dierker(4-6) absorbed the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 5 hits in 5 innings. |
