Sox take 2 of 3

game 1: A sign of things to come for the series? Valentin opens the game with a bp homer chance and draws the 8 on the 1-7 chance. A 2 out nobody on error by Alicea in the 2nd was followed by a walk and single to give Boston the 1-0 lead. Oakland used 2 walks and a single in the bottom of the inning to tie it and used back to back 2 out doubles in the 3rd to go up 3-1. Boston got 5 singles and a walk to score 4 times in the 5th. Boston stretched their lead in the top of the 6th when Kirby was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Valentin single. Oakland came right back with a walk, 2b, and 3 singles to start the 6th before a sac fly and double play ended the inning with the score now tied. Mouton tripled and scored on a sac fly in the 7th. Following the pattern, Oakland got that run back on a double and single. In the 8th, Frye tripled and scored when Paquette misplayed Naehring's liner into a 2 base error. Eusebio had an rbi single for a huge insurance run. Maddux came in for the 8th and immediately gave up a homer to cut the lead to 1 again but that was it for the scoring. Belinda pitched the 9th for his 32nd save. Oakland only struck out once in this game, and it was the final batter of the game.

game 2: Clemens needed only 2 batters to excede the strikeout total from game 1( he would get 1 more the rest of the game). He was battered around pretty well, allowing 5 walks and 9 hits (most of them on 6-8 and 6-9 rolls). Luckily for him that didn't matter much as the Boston offense showed up in force in this one. The teams combined to score in 7 at bats and not once did a team score just once. In fact only once did a team only score twice. Boston pounded out 5 doubles and 6 homers among their 24 hits. In the first, Frye had an rbi single and Vaughn followed with an auto hr to make it 3-0. Oleary homered to lead off the second and Vaughn had another auto hr (this one a 2 run shot) to make it 6-0. In the 3rd, 2 doubles and 2 singles made it 9-0. Oakland got 2 in the bottom of the inning. After being held scoreless in the 4th and 5th, Greenwell hit a 3 run homer in the 6th. Oakland got those 3 back thanks to consecutive rolls of 6-8,6-8 and 6-9. In the 8th, Boston doubled up their usual run count. 3 singles, a bunt and another single brought in 2 runs. Oquendo came on as a pinch hitter and smacked a 3 run homer. After an out, Frey also homered to make the final score 18-5. Eschelman tossed 3 perfect innings to get a save. 11 different Sox hitters scored (only Canseco who was pulled in the 4th did not score). Oleary, Vaughn and Greenwell all had 4 rbi's.

game 3: After 2 wild offensive games, this one was a pitching duel. Herrera opened the game for Oakland with a triple and scored on a single before Sele could get an out. In the 2nd, Brosius opened with a bp homer chance (same 1-7 that Valentin had back in game 1). He gets the 7 as the ball grazed the top of the fence on the way out. Boston got on the board in the 5th when Valentin doubled and scored on a couple of ground outs. Boston loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 6th but couldn't score and Oakland held on for the 2-1 win to avoid the sweep.
