Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
After an obvious aberration last week in the Mile High City, the Reds crash back to normalcy by taking two unearned, undeserved losses before eking out a win in the series finale.... Game 1: A timely GIDP deprived the Reds of a run in the first and Bret Boone -- the worst-fielding 2e5 at 2B in Strat-O-Matic history -- immediately choked up a timely error to give L.A. 2 runs in the bottom of the first. Would each one of that swing of 3 runs in our opponent's favor be important? Aren't they always? CIN starter Kevin Jarvis, apparently a far better hitter (.538) than a pitcher (5.08) drove in a run in the second to restore the Reds' deserved lead, but then Jarvis gave 3 runs right back in a frame where the Dodgers' first 3 split cards were 20, 20 and 19 -- and they still got the hits they needed. The Reds clawed back and tied the game one more time so it came down to the bullpens, something which gives the advantage to anybody-but-the-Reds somewhere in the vicinity of 98% of the time. Sure enough, the Dodgers started their final at-bats with a surgical split card single (no more 19s and 20s now), used a couple of bunts and a single to bring him around and that was that. Final score: 6-5. CIN's Reggie Sanders hit 2 homers in the losing cause.... ======================================================================================== Game 2: ....and he'd hit a miraculous homer today, but it only delayed the inevitable. An unhealthy dose of sabotage defense helped the Dodgers to an early 6-1 lead (3 unearned) as Donne Wall's mission was scrubbed after just 2 luckless innings. Speaking of scrubs, L.A.'s newly-acquired Kirk McCaskill wasn't even breaking a sweat against the most talented offense in the N.L. and his 6-1 lead remained intact until the Reds cut it to 6-3 in the 7th via a Boone homer. CIN reliever Brian Keyser had the outing of his life (4 IP, 0 hits) to keep it close but was sadly unable to pitch forever, and the hilarious Dave Burba (who choked away yesterday's contest) made it 7-3 in favor of the Dodgers when he gophered one up to Raul Mondesi. The Reds loaded the bases with 0 outs in the 9th and could only muster 1 run on a passed ball until Sanders came to the plate with 2 on and the Reds down to our last out -- and tied the game with a home run!!! Surprisingly, the Reds did not choke it right back in the bottom of the 9th. We waited until the 10th to let Mondesi find another surgical split card for another gopher. Final score: 9-7. Cincy chokes up 3 unearned runs (L.A.: 0), goes 1 for 10 with RISP (L.A. bats .400), and strands 10 runners (L.A.: 3). Sometimes it takes a Herculean effort to lose a game, but the Reds were up to the task even after Sanders' miracle shot in the 9th tried to derail that effort. ======================================================================================== Game 3: Mediocre lefty starter Mark Langston is exactly the type the CIN offense should destroy, and things started off in that direction when the Reds tallied 3 times in the 1st. We were aided, for a happy and very rare change, by some unearned runs in our behalf. But Cincy starter Andres Berumen wasted no time in giving the Dodgers a run and we also returned the favor of the unearned runs in the 4th and set ourselves up for another defeat by trailing 4-3 as the offense went into full hibernation. The split cards were working their usual magic against the Reds (7 of 8 adverse draws for our hitters) and therefore Langston was able to turn back the clock and look like he did in the days when he had an excellent card instead of a weak one. Berumen and reliever Tim Fortugno (who choked away yesterday's contest) were combining on a 6-hitter and not walking everyone in the house either, but none of that mattered until Chad Curtis and Benito Santiago finally came through with RBI hits in the 7th to break Langston's spell and give the visitors a 6-4 lead. Fortugno retired the last 6 Dodgers in a row to earn save #3 of 1995, and Berumen recorded his 5th win against 4 defeats in the 6-4 final. Alan |
