Sox take the first 3 and clinch the East title. game 1: The 2 teams slept walked their way through this one. Neither team got a hit until the 4th inning (although there were 6 walks before that). Oleary had a 2 run double in the 5th to break the ice finally. Eschelman left with a 2 hitter after 7 innings. Ryan allowed a walk in a scoreless 8th. Belinda came on and gave up a 1 out bp homer before getting save #34 in the 2-1 win. game 2: Boston wasted no time in this one. Hosey drew a 1 out walk, stole second and scored on O'leary's single to make it 1-0 in the first. Carter's 2 out 2 run single capped a 3 run 3rd for Toronto and gave them their first lead of the series. Eusebio led off the 5th with a homer and O;leary and Vaughn had back to back 2 out rbi singles to put Boston back in front. Mouton had a 2 out rbi double in the 6th but Toronto got 3 straight 2 out singles for 1 run and a passed ball tied the game up. Greenwell drew a one out walk in the 8th and stole second. After an out, the Jays intentionally walked slugger Espinoza. Apparently that rattled Williams as he walked the next 2 as well to force in the winning run. Belinda had an uneventful 9th for save #35 in the 6-5 win. game 3: After a couple close ones, the Sox got their clincher in a blowout. Single, single walk to start the game loaded the bases and Reggie Jefferson (making his first start of the year) followed with a 2 run double. After an out, Greenwell had a 2 run single to make it 4-0. Owens had a 2 out rbi double for Toronto in the bottom of the first. Greenwell had a 3 run homer in the 3rd and Jefferson a 2 run shot in the 5th. Espinoza added an rbi groundout and it was 10-1. Jefferson added an rbi single in the 8th to make the final score 11-1. Joe Hudson made his SMILEY debut and tossed 2 scoreless innings in support of winner Haney. Jefferson and Greenwell both finished 4-5 with a homer and 5 rbi. Jefferson had 1 double and just missed 2 others (17 on a 1-14 and 9 on 1-8 chance). game 4: The clinching letdown didn't happen right away for Boston as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead after 2 1/2 innings. Eusebio had an rbi double and Oleary,Mouton and Oquendo had consecutive 2out rbi singles to put the Sox up 4-0 in the second. Sprague got one back with a bp homer to open the bottom of the inning. Eusebio had a 2 run bp homer in the 3rd and it looked like the rout was on for the 2nd straight day. Then the bottom of the inning happened. Carter had an rbi double and Owens followed with a bp homer. After a walk and out #2,x-play single, single, bp single (at the limit) and throwing error gave Toronto the lead. A passed ball added an insurance run and it was 8-6. Toronto used 3 singles in the 6th to score another run (the passed ball in this inning didn't aid the scoring for once) and they got an unearned run in the 8th to make the final 10-6 |
