Subject: BAA @ TOA Week 25
With a severe shortage of outfield PAs at their disposal, the Orioles fielded makeshift lineups and watched Toronto take three of four to end their faint wild card hopes. Good luck to this year’s playoff teams. Game 1: TOA 7, BAA 6 Toronto’s Shawn Green and Ed Sprague doubled in the game’s first two runs in the 2nd, and John Olerud singled in another to make it 3-0 after 3 innings. The Orioles got their first hit in the 5th, as well as their first run on a sac fly by Mike Pagliarulo, but Tony Phillips and Olerud got RBI doubles in the bottom of the inning --- which loomed larger when Baltimore’s Keith Lockhart hit a clutch three-run homer to cut the Blue Jays’ lead to 5-4. Taking advantage of a dreadful relief appearance by Greg Swindell, the Jays added two more in the 7th on singles by Roberto Alomar and Sprague. Again, those became critical when Brady Anderson hit a two-run homer in the 7th, although the O’s ran themselves out of the inning when Craig Biggio tried to take third on a two-out single. The Orioles got the tying run to second with one out in the ninth, but Alomar turned a line drive by Anderson into a game-ending unassisted double play. Game 2: TOA 5, BAA 0 By the bottom of the 3rd, the two teams had combined to have runners thrown out at second, third, and home, although Toronto managed one run on a single by Alex Gonzalez. The next run didn’t score until the 7th, when Sprague took Ben McDonald deep to give the Jays a 2-0 lead. An unlikely lefty-on-lefty single by Joe Orsulak drove in two more to key a three-run Blue Jays outburst in the 8th. The Orioles went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, including another game-ending double play. Game 3: BAA 5, TOA 1 Phillips turned a Mike Mussina pitch into a souvenir to give Toronto a 1-0 2nd inning lead. The Orioles squandered a bases-loaded opportunity in the 2nd, but in the 5th their luck finally changed. With the bases loaded and two out, Toronto starter Paul Menhart threw a game-tying wild pitch, and Biggio hit a two-run single to give the O’s their first lead of the series. In the top of the 9th, the Orioles manufactured a run as Curtis Goodwin singled, stole second and third, and scored on a safety squeeze… which was rendered anticlimactic when Rafael Palmeiro ended a string of bad split cards with a solo homer. With a four-run lead, Mussina was allowed to finish for a three-hit complete game. Game 4: TOA 6, BAA 0 As badly as starter Scott Erickson pitched in the first – giving up five singles and a walk – the Orioles were lucky that the score was only 3-0. Paul Molitor got another RBI single in the 2nd to put Toronto up 4-0. In the 3rd, the Orioles loaded the bases with one out, only to see Biggio ground into a double play. Erickson stuck around till the 4th, when Molitor touched him for a two-run homer. There was little drama and no scoring after that. Toronto’s Tyler Green, in his only start of the season, threw a five-hit shutout. (It’s just as well that the Baltimore bats went cold in this series. By my math, the six Orioles outfielders not named Alex Diaz finished the season with a combined 3 PA available.) |
