Alan,
Here something I posted to the SOM baseball list serve earlier tonight on
the subject:
You should all know that I have great bias when it comes to this contraction
issue as I am (was?) a life long Twin fan. I am in shock and saddend by what
appears to be happening. Having said that, you could search the archives and
find that I once argued for contraction and for the days of two divisions in
each league LOL! Be careful what you wish for! <vbg>.
My initial thought was to boycott MLB over this mistake of contracting the
Twins. But then Karl posted about being a fan and about the loss of the
Browns in football etc. I will remain a fan - because I love the game of
baseball and I refuse to let Bud the d...h... ruin it for me! F... Y.. Bud
and the horse you rode in on!
Afterall, where I live now - SF Bay Area, the A's are an exciting young team
for now and I got to see Bonds go gonzo this year.
Those of you who argue that contraction is good and may help restore the
various balances in the game could well be right... but please don't seek my
agreement tonight as I am sad and angry about the Twins demise. I firmly
blame Bud and Carl Pohlad for this. As for the fans in Minnesota, they are
not stupid. They knew all to well what Pohlad was doing to that team and
they rightly were put off by it. Having lived their until 1989, I can say
its a great baseball town. But, stupid and shady people like Pohlad and
Selig will never get the public's support in Minnesota. Also, Minnesotans
hate almost nothing more than a pipsquek like Bud Selig trying to blackmail
them into subsidizing one of the richest men in the world with their tax
dollars in order to keep a MLB team. Afterall, there are schools to fund,
roads to build, hell, roads to plow! So... the result is no MLB in
Minnesota... they'll get over it ... go to college baseball, the St. Paul
Saints minor league baseball etc. life goes on. And, the die hards will go
to Wrigley for weekend baseball trips. Sorry Bud, they will bypass beer town
out of spite! You won't gain a single new fan for your daughter's Brewers.
Me... I'll get over this too and probably see the wisdom in having less
teams in MLB.

It looks as if it's a done deal, according to what I'm hearing. OTOH, it
may just a ploy on the part of MLB to get concessions from the players now
that the latest CBA is expiring.
