If this series was any indication its going to be a good news/bad news year for the Sox. The good news is the offense will put up big numbers, the bad news is that the pitching and defense will put up just as big numbers for the opposition. Sox slug their way to a 2-1 series win game 1: Biggio's 2 out single in the third brings in the first run of the year. Sox answer right back when Jefferson and Vaughn open the 4th with back to back doubles. Lockhart had a bases loaded double and Biggio another 2 out single as the O's put up 4 in their half of the 4th. After a quiet 5th inning (no one reached base) the Sox brought out the big bats in the 6th. Jefferson hit a 2 run homer and 4 batters later, Oleary hit a 3 run shot to put the sox up 6-5. The O's left the bases loaded in the 6th and Boston left men on the corners in the 7th and 2 more on in the 8th and the O's had the tying run thrown out at the plate to end the 8th as even the non scoring innings had plenty of action. Head to the bottom of the 9th when the O's got walk,sb,single,sb to put men on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. A passed ball tied the game and moved the winning run up so the CF(x) out turned into the game winning sac fly as the O's rallied for the 7-6 win. game 2: Boston struck early as Jefferson and Vaughn had back to back 2 out doubles in the first. In the 3rd, the duo outdid themselves with back to back homers (Jefferson's was a 2 run shot) to make it 4-0. Biggio had a bases loaded double in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-3. The duo came up with the bases loaded and no out in the 5th but Jefferson flew out but Vaughn managed a sac fly. Bragg had an rbi single in the 6th to make it 6-3. Lockhart had a 2 run double in the 6th to make it a 1 run game again. Maddux and Brandenburg combined for 2 shutout inning to preserve the 6-5 win. game 3: After less than stellar pitching performances fans were hoping Clemens and Mussina could stem the offensive tide in the finale. One succeeded and the other failed miserably. Clemens tossed 7 innings of 4 hit shutout ball. Bragg led off the game with a single, moved to second on a bunt and scored on a Canseco single. In the 2nd, Jefferson doubled and scored on a Bragg single. In the 3rd, Valentin had a 2 run single and Jefferson doubled and scored for a 5-0 lead. Then a funny thing happened. The hitting stopped. 21 of the next 24 batters made outs between the 2 teams. Naehring's homer in the 8th finally drove Mussina from the game. In the bottom of the 8th, HAL reared his ugly head. A 2 out error by Frye got the O's on the board and then Surhoff followed with a split of 2 on his 1-2 homer chance to make it 6-4 and Boston management was getting worried. The O's played gracious host and had their own 2 out error that allowed a run to score and Jefferson added an rbi single to make the final 8-4. If it seemed like every Boston scoring involved Jefferson and Vaughn it just about did. They combined to go 16-24 with 10 xbh (7 2b's and 3 hr's). The rest of the team was 18-87 with 6 xbh. |
