Previous message                 Next message Message #: 32663 Message from: Charlie Steinhice Sent: May 12, 2015 Subject: BAA @ NYA Week 1 (plus Week 2 CM) The Yankees took two of three exciting one-run games from the visiting Orioles.     Game 1: BAA 5, NYA 4 (10)   On Opening Day at Yankee Stadium, aces Mike Mussina and Andy Pettitte squared off. Both teams missed golden opportunities in the 1st; Baltimore’s BJ Surhoff grounded out with the bases loaded, but atoned by throwing Paul O’Neill out at the plate when the odds were against him.  The Yankees got to Mussina in the 2nd on back-to-back solo homers by Cecil Fielder and Mariano Duncan, but the Orioles countered in the 3rd as Brady Anderson tripled in a run and scored on a sac fly for a 2-2 tie.  New York went back up by two runs in the 4th, thanks to an RBI double by Derek Jeter and a sac fly by Bernie Williams.  Surhoff homered in the 6th to make it 4-3, and a two-out double by Cal Ripken in the 8th got Mussina off the hook and tied it up 4-4 to set up extra innings.  Pettitte was still on the mound in the 10th to give up a solo shot by Rafael Palmeiro to give Baltimore the lead.  Without any decent right-handed relievers left in the pen, Orioles lefty Jesse Orosco stayed on the mound and barely survived for the win; the game ended with runners on second and third.     Game 2: NYA 3, BAA 2   Duncan’s RBI single in the 2nd put New York on the board.  But with two outs in the top of the 3rd, Jeffrey Hammonds homered, Roberto Alomar walked, and Craig Biggio doubled him in to give the O’s a 2-1 lead.  The lead was short-lived, as the Yankees used the hit-and-run for three batters in a row in the bottom of the 3rd and wound up back on top, 3-2.  Despite plenty of opportunities, that was the end of the scoring for this game.  Winning pitcher Jimmy Key gave up 5 hits in eight innings before walking the leadoff man in the 9th, but Mariano Rivera had his back.     Game 3: NYA 4, BAA 3   For the third straight game, the Yankees scored the game’s first run in the 2nd inning, as a bad throw on a steal attempt by Tino Martinez set up a sac fly by Fielder.  With Fielder on first, Duncan made it 3-0 when he took Orioles starter Scott Erickson deep in the 4th.  Kenny Rogers held the Orioles in check until the 6th, when he loaded the bases and gave way to Mike Stanton.  After an RBI groundout, Ripken tied the game with a clutch two-out double.  The score stood at 3-3 until the bottom of the 9th, when a one-out triple by Duncan set off an inevitable Kabuki theatre of manager moves.  The O’s intentionally walked Darryl Strawberry to set up the double play, but Strawberry stole second and Joe Girardi walked.  When the O’s brought in lefty closer Randy Myers, the Yankees actually pinch-hit for the red-hot Boggs… and it worked, as Ruben Rivera came through with a walkoff pinch single.  Duncan wound up just a double short of the cycle.
