Pitching?  What’s that?  In three games at Arlington, the Rangers and Orioles combined for 68 hits, 32 walks, 10 doubles, 1 triple, 16 homers, 4 hit batsmen, and four wild pitches.  Somehow the Orioles swept the series.

Game 1: BAA 7, TEA 4

Roberto Alomar led off the game with his first home run of the season.  But in the bottom of the inning, after getting the first out, Orioles starter Charles Nagy gave up three singles, a hit batsman, two wild pitches, and a two-run Juan Gonzalez double to put Texas up 3-1.  Baltimore’s Mike Stanley led off the second with a solo HR.  But in the bottom of the inning, after getting the first out, Nagy gave up two walks and two singles, although an outfield assist by newly acquired Rob Deer held the damage to just one Rangers run.  That pattern broke in the 3rd.  A sac fly by Stanley in the 4th cut it to 4-3, and another sac fly by Craig Biggio tied it at 4-4 in the 7th.  Perhaps the game’s biggest play came in the bottom of the 7th.  After an intentional walk to load the bases, Alomar and Stanley combined with Rafael Palmeiro for a critical 4-2-3 double play.  Baltimore’s Mike Blowers came through in the 8th with a decisive two-out, three-run homer.

Game 2: BAA 11, TEA 7

Palmeiro took Rangers starter Mark Portugal deep to put Baltimore up 2-0 in the 1st.  In the top of the third, after Brady Anderson singled in a run, Cal Ripken chased Portugal with a grand slam.  Reliever Dave Telgheder didn’t fare much better, giving up a three-run shot to Deer; one more run on a fielder’s choice gave the Orioles an 11-0 lead.  Texas finally got on the board thanks to Kevin Elster’s 2-run homer in the 5th.  The seventh inning was ugly for both teams.  Texas reliever Bob Patterson walked the only three batters he faced, but Dan Plesac came on to get two strikeouts and end the threat.  Orioles reliever Matt Karchner also loaded the bases – twice – but the Rangers could only get one run on a sac fly by Albert Belle.  The O’s loaded the bases again in the 8th – this time with no outs – but again failed to score.  But in the bottom of the inning, with two on, O’s reliever Jesse Orosco came in for one batter and fellow lefthander Rusty Greer nailed him for a three-run homer to make it 11-6.  Thanks to a solo HR by Gonzalez in the 9th, the Rangers scored seven unanswered runs in the last five innings to make the final score look less lopsided.

Game 3: BAA 12, TEA 10

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the 1st without benefit of an RBI, as Julio Franco scored on a double play.  In the 2nd, Elster touched spot starter Rick Krivda for a 3-run homer and a 4-0 lead.  In the 3rd, after two Orioles singles, Biggio and Anderson went back-to-back to tie it.  As Krivda struggled against a righty-laden Rangers lineup, -the O’s used a quick hook and turned to RHP Archie Corbin, but to no avail as Gonzalez hit a go-ahead three-run jack in the 5th.  However, after a walk in the top of the 6th, BJ Surhoff and Ripken went back-to-back to tie the game, and two outs later Anderson and Palmeiro singled in two more to give the Orioles a 9-7 lead.  With runners on second and third and two out in the bottom of the 6th, the Rangers were poised to regain the lead, but Corbin got three straight strikeouts to end the threat.  Belle homered off Armando Benitez in the bottom of the 7th to make it a one-run game, and again the Rangers got two on before Benitez got two big strikeouts.  In the 8th, the O’s regained some breathing room as Biggio singled in two runs and scored on a sac fly to make it 12-8.  Benitez stifled another Rangers rally in the 8th with an inning-ending strikeout. With two out in the bottom of the 9th, a fatigued Benitez gave up an RBI single to Ivan Rodriguez and walked the bases loaded, bringing Greer to the plate as the potential winning run.  Baltimore brought in their lefty closer, Randy Myers – who walked the left-handed Greer.  Without another viable right-hander in the bullpen, the O’s had no choice but to let Myers face Julio Franco… and strike him out for the save.

Lost in the Orioles sweep was the phenomenal performance of Gonzalez.  He went 7 for 11 with 4 runs, 6 RBIs, 3 doubles, and two homers.  Add in the three times he walked, and I calculate his OPS for the series as 2.168.
