Subject: Reds @ Mets
After a Week 1 aberration (5-1) the Reds get back to playing our kind of ball, with both hands clasped fully around the throat area.... Game 1: New York got 5 early runs but the Reds fought back and held a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the 8th. Three singles and a walk made the score 7-6 before Cincy reliever Hector Carrasco loaded the bases for the Mets with 2 outs but got Mike Piazza to miss a split card chance (quite a rarity in this series for the Mets) and he LOBbed the bases full. No matter. Carrasco and Jeff Brantley burnished their Arson Squad credentials nicely when it counted the most -- but they had a lot of help. Carrasco walked Fred McGriff leading off the dreaded bottom of the ninth and when the lumbering speedster attempted to swipe second base he was not only safe but Eddie Taubensee helpfully rifled the ball into center field (error #1) to put the tying run at third base with 0 out. And 2 pitches later a Bernard Gilkey single (found that gb(A)+ with the infield in, natch) tied it, but the choke was hardly complete yet. Edgardo Alfonzo hit an easy tapper back to Carrasco, who flubbed it for error #2 of the inning. Jeff "Blown Save" Brantley took over and loaded the bases with a 5 pitch free pass. The next batter hit a routine grounder to Barry '1' Larkin. Who, as you surely guessed, booted it for error #3 of the inning. Game over, nobody-chokes-like-the-Reds for the ten millionth time in league history, 8-7. In the 9th there were 2 walks, 3 errors, 1 undeserved single, and we're still looking for that first out. ============================================================================= Game 2: No split card chance is too small for a Cincy opponent to hit, and John Smiley found that out today the hard way when he allowed 3 gophers on 3 chances, none of which even remotely approached a 50% chance of success. He also allowed a 4th gopher which was automatic. That surgery caused a 7-run hole from which the Reds didn't even try to escape until an insufficient 3-run rally in the 8th which made the final score 7-4. ============================================================================= Game 3: CIN starter Dave Burba caught HAL napping and was headed for the game of his life until the roof caved in during the 7th inning. New York's Mark Clark had an outstanding outing and permitted just 2 hits in 6 innings, but both of those singles came in the fourth and when added to a walk and an HBP resulted in 3 runs scoring. Meanwhile Burba merely had a PERFECT GAME going through six innings but the noise from the 7th inning stretch woke HAL up and he got right down to business. A pair of, what else, surgical split cards leading off the inning turned two shoula-been-easy-outs into two singles and a rattled Burba followed that up with a walk to load the bases and invite disaster. Sure enough, a sac fly and a single turned the 3-0 lead into a 3-2 nailbiter just that quick. Buddy Groom saved the day -- for the moment -- by getting the final 2 outs of the frame without further devastation. Groom left after a leadoff single in the NYN 8th and Jeff Shaw wasted little time in loading the bases yet again for the home team. But poor Mike Piazza (who had a very good series otherwise) somehow missed a split card again and failed to deliver any runs, then McGriff grounded out to end the threat. After 2 very eventful frames, Shaw refrained from the Arson Squad's usual dramatics in the bottom of the 9th and actually retired the side in order to save the 3-2 win and avert the sweep! While the Reds bumbled around in the field, the Mets -- particularly 4's such as Piazza behind the plate and Derrick May in right field -- made numerous spectacular plays and converted nearly 90% of their x-chances.
