Subject: 1995 NLCS, game 3
Facing elimination, the #1 team in the National League returned home after a day off with the hope that the most talented offense in the league could finally catch a break in this series. But they couldn't.... Does this sound just a bit like game 1? Cincy's Scott Kamieniecki & 2 relievers combined to limit the Marlins to 4 hits.... and the luckless Reds still lost (but at least this time it was close!). Florida took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when a leadoff free pass was followed by a runner-advancing groundout and then by a timely single. There was a chance to get the runner at home, but the Reds instead took the greater probability shot at the trailer. Alas, a split card was still required so naturally the runner was safe. Center fielder Chad Curtis and his candy arm couldn't record the out a few feet away at second base, but at least he brought his bat today and in the CIN 3rd delivered a 2-out triple to tie the game before becoming 1 of 9 LOB for the Reds today. In the 5th the M's retook a 1-run lead when Charles Johnson had a slight chance at a gopher and rolled precisely at the split card limit to hit it. One inning later the Reds responded to retie the contest and once again a triple was involved. Curtis drew a leadoff walk from Mike Hampton and Reggie Sanders tripled him home. Hampton's temporary wildness helped the Reds some more when he walked Benito Santiago and hit Herb Perry with a pitch to load the sacks with still 0 out. With the infield in and powerful Billy Ashley at the plate, of course a gb(A) (with no + next to it) was rolled with the DP eliminating a runner at the plate for the first out. Bret Boone grounded out weakly to terminate the rally. One inning later Thomas Howard led off with a grounder that Alex Arias booted at shortstop. Mark Lewis and Barry Larkin followed with 1-base singles to load 'em up again with 0 out. Surely that error is going to prove very costly. How about an instant replay instead? With the infield in and Chad Curtis at the plate, of course a gb(X) was rolled (and successfully handled) with the DP eliminating a runner at the plate for the first out. Sanders walked but then Santiago grounded out weakly to terminate the rally, so the contest remained knotted at 2 apiece. The Reds don't need to be on the road in order to choke in the 9th inning, and here comes the final nail in the 1995 coffin. Jeff Shaw had entered in the 7th and worked out of a minor jam before pitching an uneventful 8th. And so began the 9th in the same manner when the first 2 batters were easily retired. With the Reds needing just 1 more out a pair of split card chances followed, both inevitably resulting in hits, the second one for extra bases resulting in the season-ending losing run after the Reds went 0 for 2 on our split chances in the bottom of the frame. Final score: 3-2. The Florida error in the Cincy 7th certainly wasn't costly but it was significant, being the solitary one of 19 x-chances in the series that was not successfully converted into an out by our opponent (94.7% success rate). Other notes: The FLN bullpen was even more perfect than the defense though that was hardly possible, allowing 0% of inherited runners to score (CIN bullpen: 55.6%) and it wasn't because there were so few runners, particularly in scoring position. The Reds batted 26 times with RISP in this brief series -- basically once per inning -- and got *2* hits. Under Strat's definition of "clutch" the Reds batted 12 times.... and got 0 hits. Alan |
