Subject: Reds @ Giants
The Giants have been the doormats of the National League so far in 1996, entering this series with a record of 4-11. Turns out all they needed to begin going in the right direction was to play 3 games against the unluckiest team in the universe.... Game 1: San Fran's Jaime Navarro had been somewhat ineffective this season, accumulating a 10.69 ERA in his 3 starts with opponents batting a mere .411 against him. So of course all he did today was pitch 7.2 innings and permit *one* hit. That was a single by Chad Curtis in the second inning and he was rapidly erased on a DP, and when the Reds "threatened" in the 4th via a leadoff error and a walk, that was also thwarted by another timely rally-killing DP. Navarro didn't get a lot of offensive support, but this sudden reincarnation of Cy Young didn't need much. The lone run that the Giants scored came in the 3rd inning by way of a trio of surgical split card singles off of CIN starter A.J. Sager (5 IP, 4 singles, 1 walk, 1 run, 1 loss), the last of the 3 coming typically with 2 outs. In the 9th inning with 2 outs and nobody on base, Eric Davis doubled the Cincy hit count for the day with a double. The Giants then pitched around Hal Morris, who rolled in a loaded column and found not a walk (which would have been the usual result in that situation) but the slender chance at an out stashed way up on a roll of 2. Final score: Cy Young Junior 1, Reds 0. ============================================================================= Game 2: The Reds burst out with 2 runs in the first inning to finally dent the scoreboard, but Kevin Jarvis coughed up a gopher to the initial batter in the bottom of the frame (dangerous slugger Darren Lewis, who came in batting .106) then committed an error on a grounder by batter #2, who naturally came around to score. The Reds eventually rebuilt the 2-run advantage and, as happens nearly every time, eventually choked it away as well. With the score 4-4 after 6 innings, alleged Gold Glover Barry Larkin vomited all over a grounder leading off the inning, and the lucky recipient of that gift naturally came around to score, doing so quite cheaply on reliever Jeff Brantley's first pitch which ended up at the backstop without a dice roll being required. A couple of walks and a single in the Cincy 9th added up to diddly-squat when a baserunner who had a *100%* chance of success at a stolen base turned out to have a 100% chance of being picked off instead, and Morris again rolled his loaded column with 2 outs in the inning but this time found the hit that would plate the tying run from third.... except it had the $ choke sign next to it. A perfectly fitting way to end a contest that featured 2 unearned runs in a 1-run loss. Final score: Giants 5, Nobody Chokes Like The Reds 4. ============================================================================= Game 3: This one was decided in the opening frame when one team got its leadoff runner to 3rd with 0 outs and failed to score, while the other team got one lucky gopher swing that resulted in 3 runs. There wasn't much scoring after that, other than the Reds getting just enough to register our third consecutive 1-run defeat, 4-3. After 2 more timely rally-killing DPs in the middle innings kept the Reds deep in our customary hole, Reggie Sanders came through with a 2-run homer in the 8th which simply made the losing margin 1 run rather than 3. Since there was no lead to choke away, Cincy reliever Buddy Groom provided 3 scoreless innings and currently sports a 0.00 ERA, but he's still new here and will learn shortly how he's supposed to perform in the clutch.
