Subject: Reds @ Padres

Each game was decided by some timely gopher balls, and -- amazingly -- less than 100% of them went against the Reds....!

Game 1: The Reds had a 2-1 lead and probable future Padre Donne Wall retired the first 2 batters in the SDN 6th before 3 straight 2-out singles plated the tying run.  The Reds quickly rallied in our 7th with a single, walk & double but scored zilch thanks to yet another timely GIDP being interspersed and the score remained tied, until....

Again in the Padre 9th the first 2 batters were easily dispatched back to the dugout but a split card single prolonged the frame long enough for mighty slugger Gary Disarcina to be summoned as a pinch-hitter.  He rolled a split card chance at a gopher, and Cincy opponents rarely miss no matter how slender the odds.  He didn't.  Final score: 4-2, with all 4 runs being choked up after 2 were out in an inning.

But poor San Diego was due for a win as they "ended a long winless drought" according to HAL's summarization of the boxscore.  How long was that horrible drought that HAL took pity on?

One game.  The Reds continue to be the most underachieving team in the league by a mile (3-10 in the last 13) but apparently aren't "due" for anything but more of the same.

======================================================================

Game 2: Or maybe not.  Overcoming some of that fantastic clutch hitting we're so famous for (2 for 13 with RISP in the first 2 games of this series) the Reds got 2 good swings of the bat and that pair of 2-run homers was sufficient, just barely, to eke out a 4-2 win.

CIN starter Dave Burba had a 2-0 lead but that wouldn't do so he left after making it a 2-2 tie.  To everyone's surprise the Reds then won the battle of the bullpens when Hector Carrasco registered 3 scoreless innings and Kevin Mitchell connected for a homer off of SDN reliever Doug Bochtler in the 8th.

Burba allowed just 3 hits in 6 IP but 2 of those 3 came sandwiched around a free pass with 0 out in the 5th and cost him a potential win.  Though he would not throw a pitch in game 3, Burba would make a valuable and surprising contribution nonetheless.

======================================================================

Game 3: The Reds loaded up with RHB against Allen Watson and recalled Russ Springer from the minors to make his debut.  Mitchell struck again in the 1st and gave the Reds a 2-0 lead, so of course we trailed shortly thereafter as Springer displayed the beneficial traits of being both extremely wild and extremely hittable.

But the CIN batters continued to bombard our lefty opponent as we should do to any lefty, and the Reds took the lead in the 5th via 2 doubles, 1 single and a Tony Phillips homer.

With a 5-3 lead in the 6th and a rally all but terminated after another timely GIDP, Burba was used as a pinch-hitter (instead of some actual hitter from the all-lefty bench) against Watson and came up with -- miracle of miracles -- a clutch RBI hit to make the score 6-3!

Springer collapsed after 5 IP and 101 pitches during which he permitted 11 baserunners, and closer Jeff Brantley was rode hard for a 4 inning stint.  He not only allowed 0 hits (!) but got one himself in the 8th.  Phillips cleaned up with a 2-run triple as the next hitter, making it an 8-3 final.  Mitchell & Phillips combined for 7 of the 8 RBI.

We took the lead just in time for Springer to somehow get a W for his miserable effort, with the seldom-used Brantley (we usually can't even keep it close enough to need him) settling for his 3rd save in 4 weeks.

Alan
