Despite the current scandal that has come to light and the threat of the
first stoppage of play in the history of the game, the San Diego Padres
refuse to sit by quietly and announce that several players have asked to
be traded, citing the teams near future is not bright and that they
would like to play for a contender.
The main player up for grabs is centerfielder Clarence Gaston. When
asked to comment on his trade request Mr Gaston replied, " I have
aspirations to become a manager in this league one day. I've learned how
to handle losing, I want to learn how do deal with winning. I don't want
to look back on my career and say I could have been on a contender."
Management hope to be able to move him soon, saying the fans have turned
on the centerfielder who struggled mightily, like all the Padres in 69,
sporting just a .187 batting average. Fans have nicknamed him "The Fan"
due to the fact that he often swings and misses. Gaston has struck out
over 200 times in just over 700 pa's in his year and a half in the
league.
ANother player that has asked to be moved is first round claimee Pat
Dobson. Much was expected out of Dobson and he has not come close to
those expectations. Except for 7.1 shutout innings in his second start,
and a complete game with no earned runs in his last start, Dobson has
been hammered with his era over 6 at points in the season. "I know fans
thought that Cesar was coming here, and maybe I tried too hard to show
them that I was just as good a choice. I know I can pitch, but for some
reason, I can't put it together here in San Diego."
Management said they will do their best to move them, but will not give
them away. With a thin roster already, SD needs replacement ab's or
starts to replace these key starters. San Diego prefers to get future
help, citing the fact that they will not be competetive for at least 2
more seasons, if not longer.Players who have their best years in 73-75
(or longer) and/or high picks are what the Padres are looking for as
they continue to try to slowly piece together a team to challenge in the
heavily talented NL West.
