Despite still not being able to catch a ball, Boston continues to hit the ball and sweep the Mariners. game 1: It took Seattle all of two batters to take a 1-0 lead as Juicer Jr doubled and Lofton singled him in. Then the pitchers settled in and allowed just 2 walks and 2 singles in the next 23 batters. That streak came to a crashing halt in the top of the 5th. Haselman singled and Manto walked before Oleary tripled them in. Back to back ss x plays results in a force at home and a single. A ground out moved the runners up and Seattle chose to IW Vaughn to load the bases. That backfired big time as Canseco launched a grand slam to complete the 6 run inning. Haselman homered to lead off the 6th and Mouton added an rbi single to make it 8-1. The Boston defense then decided to show how not to play in the 8th. An x play single opened the inning and the next batter reached third on an x play single+error and would score on a force play. Griffey hit a homer in the 9th to make the final score 8-4. game 2: Jefferson homered in the first and Canseco added one in the 2nd before Vaughn's 3 run shot in the 3rd capped a 4 run inning and the route was on.. Not so fast there. Juicer homered in the 3rd and added another solo shot in the 5th after the Sox got a run on a dp grounder in the top half of the inning. Cora had an rbi triple and scored to make it 7-4 in the 6th. In the 8th, with runners on the corners, Henry unloaded a wild pitch which negated the gbA that followed. That runner came around on a sac fly to make it 7-6. Vaughn homered for an insurance run in the top of the 9th. Not so fast there. Down to their last out after a walk and 2 outs, Griffey singled and Buhner drove one into the gap for a tying 2 run double. Oleary walked to start the 10th and Naehring followed with a 2 run shot to make it 10-8. Seattle managed a 2 out single but that was it as Boston almost blew that 7-1 lead. Reggie Jefferson drew an 8 on his 1-4 shot at hitting for the cycle and settled for 2 doubles, a single and homer. game 3: This one was scoreless until Oleary led off the third with a hr. Jefferson opened the 4th with the same result (roll of 4-9 split of 2). Buhner had an rbi double in the bottom of the inning to get Seattle on the board. Jefferson had an rbi double in the 5th that was offset by Juicer's rbi double in the bottom of the inning. In the 6th, Bragg had an rbi double to make the lead 2 again. Vaughn smacked a solo homer in the 9th to make the final 5-2. Clemens went 8 innings for the win and Assenmacher had a 1-2-3 9th for the save. |
