Subject: Reds @ Rockies

The Cincy talent finally shines through a little bit as we move towards the position our talent warrants (first) by doing what our main competitors have done so easily in 1996 -- win on the road....

Game 1: Ballpark homer chances of 1-17 simply aren't sufficient for the luckless Reds, who missed THREE of them today as five times overall a CIN batter got a split card of exactly 20.  We also LOBbed 167% more runners than our opponent and hit into two timely rally-killing DPs.

Cincy also managed 4 home runs while John Smiley held the fort long enough for his team to overcome an early 2-0 deficit and went on to win by the score of 6-4.  Smiley & Brian Keyser combined to limit the Rockies to 6 hits (4 XBH).  The Reds hammered out 14 hits, good for 29 total bases.  Kevin Jordan, just recalled from the minors to replace an overheated Kevin Mitchell, supplied a pinch-homer in the 8th in his first at bat of the season to provide two important insurance runs.

==================================================================================

Game 2: It's a very tough call to make, but Dave Burba is probably the unluckiest player on the unluckiest team in the league, underachieving to ridiculous proportions, and on it went today.  The Reds again were down 2-0 early, hit into another pair of timely rally-killing DPs, but improved and only drew a mere three 20s in the split cards.

The offense woke up at last in the middle innings and hit Armando Reynoso for 6 runs which was Burba's cue to start hemorrhaging again and his second 2-run gopher bite cut our lead to 6-4.  After tacking on some more runs late, Burba was bitten a third time and Keyser added another run for the Rockies, but by then it was too late for them.  Reds win, 10-6.

The Reds barely kept up in the homer department, winning 4-3 there, and Burba did manage 10 strikeouts in 8 innings although just about every other pitch he threw was hit hard somewhere.

==================================================================================

Game 13 Ballpark homer chances of 1-19 simply aren't sufficient for the luckless Reds, who missed one of them today (our only 20 of the day!).... but in an absolutely unprecedented development the Rockies missed TWO and that probably cost them the game.

Colorado again struck early, with CIN starter Kent Mercker being sabotaged by lead-glove shortstop Barry '1' Larkin as 2 unearned runs gave the home team a 3-1 lead in the second.  The wind must have been blowing in because there were zero homers in the game and only 4 doubles (all by the Reds) among 24 combined hits.  The Reds LOBbed 11 runners thanks to the power outage, to Colorado's 6.

The Reds trailed 4-1 after 6 when we packed 2 of those doubles into one inning and scored 3 times before LOBbing 2 RISP.  Kevin Jordan's second double of the day led off the CIN 9th and he eventually crossed the plate to make it a 6-4 final with Jeff Shaw getting his first win of the year.  His 3 scoreless relief innings lowered his ERA to something not entirely atrocious.

As happens pretty much every week against the Reds, our opponent played impeccable ball in the field while HAL had the Reds underachieving massively there.  The Rockies successfully converted 94.7% of their x-plays (18 of 19), with the only miscue being a scratch single due to a runner being held.
