Subject: BAA@TOA Week 8 (plus Week 9 CM)

In this Orioles sweep, the only Blue Jays starter to retire a single batter gave up four homers.  The only thing that preserved any suspense was the Baltimore bullpen.

Game 1: BAA 17, TOA 1

Toronto starter Kevin Gross didn’t record a single out.  After he’d served up a bases-loaded walk and a two-run double by Cal Ripken, Gross was yanked in favor of Woody Williams, who retired two batters before reloading the bases. Greg Zaun came through with another two-run double, although Rob Deer was thrown out at home to end the five-run rally.  In the 4th, the O’s lead grew to 9-0 when Rafael Palmeiro ended Williams’s night with a two-out grand slam.  The top of the 5th was even worse for Toronto, as Zaun singled in two runs and Brady Anderson jacked another grand slam.  The O’s tacked on two more in the 8th on another bases-loaded walk and an RBI groundout.  Baltimore starter Scott Erickson went the distance for his 5th win.  The Blue Jays had runners on in almost every inning, but only a 4th inning homer by Joe Carter kept Erickson from notching a shutout.  Gross fell to 0-6.

Game 2: BAA 8, TOA 5

It was déjà vu all over again for the Blue Jays, as starter Erik Hanson yielded a leadoff homer to Craig Biggio and a grand slam by Mike Stanley to fall behind 5-0 with no outs in the first. Like Gross, Hanson was yanked before recording an out in favor of Paul Spoljaric, who left in the 2nd after a two-run Ripken double.  Thanks to a based-loaded single by Ed Sprague and an error by Orioles CF Ricky Otero, the Blue Jays cut the lead to 7-3 in the 3rd.  Deer got one back with a solo HR in the 4th to make it 8-3.  Thanks in part to a combined five double plays, that’s how the score remained until Toronto threatened in the 9th.  Carter hit a two-run homer and the O’s ultimately had to bring in closer Randy Myers for his 8th save.  Curt Schilling improved his record to 6-1, allowing just one earned in six innings while striking out seven.

Game 3: BAA 10, TOA 9

Some Toronto fans gave sarcastic cheers when starter Paul Quantrill retired the leadoff hitter in the 1st.  In the bottom of the inning, the cheers were more genuine when Juan Samuel’s two-run homer off Baltimore’s Rick Krivda gave the Jays their first lead of the series.  The teams traded runs in the 2nd , with a homer by Baltimore’s BJ Surhoff offset by an RBI double by Tomas Perez.  Samuel struck again in the 3rd with a solo shot to make it 4-1, but Palmeiro took Quantrill deep for two runs to make it a one-run game.  The homer onslaught became a Don Slaught when the Toronto catcher hit a solo shot in the 5th, but Brady Anderson homered in the 6th for two runs and Palmeiro joined him for back-to-backs and a 6-5 Orioles lead.  That chased Quantrill, who had only allowed one other hit besides those four homers.   Woody Williams fared no better, giving up a Surhoff single to set up another two-run homer, this time by Ripken.  Doubles by Robby Alomar and Anderson and an RBI single by Surhoff in the 7th gave Baltimore two more runs, but an inopportune passed ball in the bottom of the frame made it 10-6.  In a wild 8th inning, Toronto loaded the bases against O’s reliever Archie Corbin.  The usually-reliable Jesse Orosco walked the next two batters, then gave way to Scott Service, who allowed another run to score on a wild pitch before escaping the inning with a 10-9 lead.  In the top of the 9th, Biggio led off with a single but got picked off, and the Blue Jays breathed a premature sigh of relief.  Palmeiro drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch, and Toronto intentionally walked Surhoff and brought in Toby Borland to face Ripken.  Borland’s second pitch became a souvenir when Ripken came through with his second and Baltimore’s sixth homer of the game.  Service earned his first save of the season.

In the series, Anderson, Palmeiro, and Ripken combined for 6 doubles, 7 homers, 24 RBI, and by my math a combined OPS of 1.668.
