Previous message                 Next message Message #: 32920 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Jul 1, 2015 Subject: Reds @ Dodgers Despite still having no concept of what a clutch hit looks like (a whopping 4 for 28 with RISP in this series) except when we see our opponents get them, the Reds find some decent pitching and come one luckless outing away from a sweep in Los Angeles....     Game 1: CIN starter Donne Wall survived a surgical attack in the first inning in which L.A. put 3 runs on the board and still had a team batting average of 1.000 before Wall regained his balance.  He permitted no further scoring during his 6 IP stint and got some actual help (as opposed to sabotage) from the bullpen as the Reds came back for an 8-3 win.   Hideo Nomo was tagged for 5 runs before leaving after 4 innings, and Chan Ho Park gave up the final 3.  The end result could have been far more lopsided, since the Reds LOBbed 10 and made sure that our 3 home runs in the contest all did minimal damage (3 RBI).   =========================================================================   Game 2: Typical timely GIDPs and our usual dose of unhealthy split cards combined to deprive the Reds of at least 2 runs just in the opening frame, but Russ Springer came up with a 5-hitter in 8 innings of work and Blown Save Brantley pitched the 9th and didn't (blow it).  Final score: 4-2.   Cincy had as many doubles -- mainly as consolation prizes for missed split card homers -- as the Dodgers had hits in the game.  L.A. starter Pedro Astacio took the loss, but the non-hitting pitcher (.048 now) tied the game in the 2nd inning with an RBI on his first hit of the season and temporarily kept himself in contention for a win.   =========================================================================   Game 3: Kent Mercker was hittable (5 IP, 8 hits) but sabotage defense was 100% responsible for the 2 runs he allowed and he left on the short end of a 2-0 score as L.A.'s Izzy Valdes took a shutout into the 7th inning.   Willie Greene derailed the train of zeroes with a leadoff homer in the CIN 7th and 2 batters later Tony Phillips doubled Reggie Sanders home and raced to third on the throw.  Pushing his luck, Phillips tried to score on a flyout and was gunned at the plate on a 20.   The Cincy bullpen reverted to form as Jeff Shaw choked up a pair of insurance runs moments later, and one simply wouldn't have been sufficient.  Chad Curtis partially atoned for his massive 2-run blown-x howler earlier in the game when he led off the 9th with a single and scored on Willie Greene's triple to cut the deficit to 1.   The Cincy clutch chokers then went on full display, first with Sanders getting an adverse split card for an out instead of a hit, and the final 2 batters succumbing meekly on strikes.  The tying run on third with 0 outs becomes the tying run on third with 3 outs; Reds lose, 4-3, and drop to a ridiculous 3-11 (.214) in 1-run games, where factors like "luck" and "clutch hitting" -- or the lack of them -- play the biggest roles.   The Reds are 20-14 (.588) in all other games, which is exactly in line with the amount of talent on the roster.   Alan
