Previous message                 Next message Message #: 32945 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Jul 9, 2015 Subject: Reds @ Expos If the unluckiest team in the majors had only built a 10-run lead in the opener instead of an 11-run lead, they'd have choked that game away too and been swept....     Game 1: The Reds pounced on Pat Rapp & Jeff Juden for 13 runs in the first four frames and a 13-2 lead, the '2' being a pair of unearned runs donated to the Expos by the ever-generous Barry '1' Larkin at shortstop.  Any other team in the world would have cruised to an easy victory from there, but these are the Reds.  First we politely aborted the offense at that point, mustering just 2 lousy singles over the last 5 innings.    Our opponent was not nearly so polite.  A gopher and a triple produced runs for the home team in the 6th & 7th; there was not yet any cause for concern, but Dr. HAL was just getting warmed up.   Seven straight 'spos reached base to open the 8th, no column being empty enough that the dice couldn't zero in on the lone on-base chance, and 7 runs later the assault finally ran out of bullets with our 11-run lead down to a mere 2.  With still the Dreaded Bottom of the Ninth to go and the Cincy Arson Squad in top form.   Jeff Shaw's ERA had ballooned massively in just that one inning, but apparently that wasn't enough.  A gopher to Bagwell in the 9th made the score 13-12 and Shaw graciously put the tying run on base as well with 2 outs, but Jeff Brantley got the last out to save the day.    He would revert to more typical form tomorrow.   ===================================================================================   Game 2: An RBI single and back-to-back homers in the CIN 2nd gave the Reds a 4-0 lead before -- you guessed it -- we politely aborted the offense at that point.   Scrub starter Kevin Jarvis cruised into the 6th with the shutout still intact when a clutch 2-out double halved his lead.  Jarvis crashed in the 8th when he put runners on 2nd & 3rd with 0 outs.  Brantley got the first out with a strikeout against the same batter who ended yesterday's contest, but sadly that was the only one he could fool.   A groundout advanced the runners and put Montreal within one. Then with (of course) 2 outs, Blown Save Brantley did it again -- a split-card gopher which briefly tied the game and then put us behind when the gophering batter also crossed the plate.   Showing the fortitude and resiliency that the Reds are famed for, all 3 batters in the CIN 9th went meekly down on strikes.  Reds choke again, 5-4, and register our major league-leading 12th 1-run loss of the season.   ===================================================================================   Game 3: Cincy's Brian Keyser was having a decent outing, matching zeroes with Jeff Fassero until being summoned to surgery in the MON 5th.  Five consecutive batters reached base helped by a couple of fortuitous split cards, and the score was suddenly 3-0.   The Reds made it 3-2 in the 7th and had 2 more runners aboard with just 1 out when speedy Tony Phillips just had to find that DP ball to terminate the rally.   That was still too close for comfort so the Arson Squad sprung into action and issued a pair of hits followed by a trio of walks, the last with the bases loaded, which restored our 3-run deficit.   In the 9th the Reds loaded the bases with 1 out, but that was simply the cue for the final 2 batters to strike out and LOB 3.  Final score: 5-2, a rare Cincy loss by more than a single run.   Alan
